2015 Ford Mustang Oil Change — 5.0L Coyote V8 (8 Qt, 5W-50, Oil Cooler Note)
2015 Ford Mustang Oil Change — 5.0L Coyote V8 (8 Qt, 5W-50, Oil Cooler Note)
I do the oil change on my 2015 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L myself and it's one of my favorite jobs in the garage — the Coyote engine is well-engineered, accessible, and the specs are simple. The 5.0L Coyote Gen 2 takes 8 quarts of 5W-50 full synthetic, the drain plug torques to 26 ft-lbs, and the filter is in a cartridge housing on the passenger side valley of the engine. Dealer wants $140–$180 for this service. I do it for under $70 in parts.
Why 5W-50 and Not 5W-30?

Get the DIY Mechanic SystemThe 2015 Mustang GT 5.0L Coyote specifies 5W-50 full synthetic. This is different from most modern vehicles — the higher-viscosity 50-weight oil is specified because:
- High-RPM operation: The Coyote is a performance engine designed to rev to 7,000+ RPM. Higher viscosity maintains adequate oil film thickness at extreme RPMs.
- Flat-tappet and roller-follower compatibility: The Coyote uses roller finger followers, but the higher-weight oil provides margin for aggressive high-RPM operation.
- Track use cases: Owners who occasionally track their Mustangs benefit significantly from the thicker oil under sustained high-load, high-temperature conditions.
Do not substitute 5W-30 or 5W-40 in the 2015 Coyote — Ford's engineering spec is 5W-50. The only acceptable deviation is 10W-60 in extreme high-temperature environments (desert summer track days), but 5W-50 is correct for street use year-round.
Ford-approved brands: Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-50 (Ford part ZC-7-QUSCC) is the OEM choice. Castrol Edge 5W-50, Mobil 1 5W-50, and Royal Purple 5W-50 are also acceptable for street use.
Oil Cooler Note
The 2015 Mustang GT (and GT350 of the same era) may optionally have an engine oil cooler — a small heat exchanger typically mounted near the oil filter. If your Mustang has the factory oil cooler:
- The oil cooler houses additional oil volume (~0.5–0.75 qt depending on configuration)
- Total capacity with cooler may reach 8.5–9 quarts — check the dipstick carefully after filling
- The oil cooler itself does not need to be serviced during a standard oil change; it drains through the main oil circuit
- After the oil change, run the engine and check for leaks around the oil cooler fittings
Most 2015 Mustang GT models without a specific performance package do not have the factory cooler — but if you have a 2015 GT500 or a track-spec car, confirm by looking for the cooler assembly near the filter housing.

Filter Housing — Important Detail
The 5.0L Coyote uses a cartridge-style oil filter in a plastic housing on top of the engine (passenger side, near the firewall). You will need a 32mm cap-type socket to open the housing. Standard oil filter wrenches will NOT work. The housing is reverse-threaded — it comes off by turning clockwise when viewed from above.
The housing cap has an O-ring that should be replaced every oil change. Motorcraft KY-1977-A is the OEM part; it's inexpensive and available at any Ford dealer or NAPA.
Step-by-Step: 2015 Mustang GT 5.0L Oil Change
Warm-Up
-
Run the engine for 3–4 minutes. Shut off and wait 5 minutes.
-
Raise the Mustang on jack stands or ramps. Front clearance is tighter than a truck — quality ramps make this job faster.
Drain
-
Locate the drain plug at the rear center of the oil pan. It has an 8mm hex (Allen head) — not a socket head. Use a 3/8" drive 8mm hex bit socket.
-
Position your drain pan. Break the plug loose, spin out by hand. Oil will be hot.
-
Let drain 5–7 minutes. The Coyote's large oil capacity means more drainage time.
Change the Oil Filter
-
From the top of the engine: Locate the filter housing on the passenger side. Insert your 32mm cap socket and turn clockwise to loosen (reverse thread). Remove the cap with the attached filter cartridge.
-
Pull the old filter cartridge off the center post — it simply slides off.
-
Remove the O-ring from the housing cap. Install the new O-ring (Motorcraft KY-1977-A) — lightly oil it with fresh oil.
-
Slide the new Motorcraft FL-500-S filter cartridge onto the center post. Ensure it seats fully.
-
Thread the housing cap back in — turn counterclockwise to tighten. Torque to 25 ft-lbs (34 Nm).
Reinstall Drain Plug and Fill
-
Install a new drain plug washer (Motorcraft HX-6 aluminum gasket) on the 8mm hex drain plug. Thread in by hand, torque to 26 ft-lbs (35 Nm).
-
Fill with 7.5 quarts of 5W-50 to start. The fill cap is on the driver's side valve cover — a twist-off cap.
-
Start the engine. Watch for the oil pressure warning light to extinguish within 5–10 seconds. Idle 45 seconds.
-
Shut off, wait 3 minutes. Dipstick check: add remaining oil in small increments. Final capacity is 8 quarts — or 8.5 qt if you have the oil cooler. Fill to MAX on the dipstick, not to an exact volume.
Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn ignition to ON (engine off). Press the OK/Select button on the steering wheel to navigate to "Oil Life" in the instrument cluster. Hold OK for 5+ seconds until it resets to 100%.
Track Use Notes
- At the track with sustained high-RPM operation, change the oil every 2 track days or 1,500–2,000 track miles regardless of the OLM reading
- Pre-heat the engine (2–3 warm-up laps) before pushing it hard — cold 5W-50 is thick, and oil pressure needs to stabilize
- After a track day, check the level — the Coyote can consume a small amount of oil under sustained high-load operation
Cost Comparison: DIY vs. Dealer
| DIY | Ford Dealer | |
|---|---|---|
| 8 qt 5W-50 synthetic | $55–$75 | Included |
| Motorcraft FL-500-S | $10–$15 | Included |
| O-ring | $3–$5 | Included |
| Labor | $0 | $100–$130 |
| Total | $68–$95 | $150–$220+ |
Savings: $100–$130 per service.
