The 2017 Toyota Highlander with the 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 is a 4,500-pound three-row SUV. That weight is what makes brake maintenance important — the braking system on this vehicle works hard, and worn pads translate directly to longer stopping distances when you've got a full load of passengers and cargo. I've done the brakes on three Highlanders over the past few years, and this is my complete guide for front and rear pad replacement.
Budget about 2–3 hours for both axles your first time. The front is about 45 minutes; the rear about an hour (the rear calipers use a screw-in piston that requires a wind-back tool).

The 2017 Highlander came in multiple trims. Check your rotor diameter before ordering pads:
- Standard front rotor: 320mm
- SE front rotor: 328mm

Parts Needed
Front pads:
- OEM Toyota: 04465-0E020 / 04466-0E020
- Aftermarket: Akebono ACT1376 (ceramic, direct fit) or TRW GDB3319DT
Rear pads:
- OEM Toyota: 04466-0E030
- Aftermarket: Akebono ACT1377
Other supplies: CRC Brake Quiet, caliper lube, brake cleaner, fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
Tools
- 14mm socket (caliper bracket bolts — front), 17mm (rear on some trims)
- 12mm socket (caliper slide pin bolts)
- Torque wrench
- C-clamp or piston cube (front)
- Caliper wind-back tool (rear — required)
- Wire brush, shop rags
Front Brake Pad Replacement
- Break the lug nuts loose before lifting the car.
- Lift and support on jackstands. Remove the front wheel.
- Remove the two 12mm caliper slide pin bolts and slide the caliper off the rotor. Hook it to the spring — don't let it hang by the brake hose.
- Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- Inspect the caliper slide pins — clean and re-lube with caliper pin grease.
- Inspect the dust shields — look for cracks, heavy rust, or contact marks from the rotor. Light surface rust is normal; a bent or cracked shield should be addressed before it contacts the rotor.
- Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap. Use a C-clamp to push the front piston straight back into the caliper bore.
- Clean the caliper bracket channels with a wire brush.
- Apply brake pad shim grease to the pad backing plates and bracket contact points.
- Clip in new hardware. Install new pads in the bracket.
- Reinstall caliper over the pads. Torque slide pin bolts to 25 ft-lbs (34 Nm).
- Torque lug nuts to 76 ft-lbs (103 Nm) in a star pattern.
Rear Brake Pad Replacement
The rear calipers on the 2017 Highlander typically use a screw-in piston — you cannot simply push the piston straight in. You must rotate it clockwise while compressing.
- Use a caliper wind-back tool (cube tool) — this simultaneously pushes and rotates the piston.
- Rear caliper slide pin bolt torque: 25 ft-lbs (34 Nm)
- Rear lug nut torque: 76 ft-lbs (103 Nm)
Break-In / Bedding Procedure
New pads need a heat cycle to transfer friction material to the rotor surface evenly:
- From 30 mph, apply moderate brake pressure down to 5 mph — don't come to a complete stop.
- Release brakes, accelerate back to 30 mph. Allow 30 seconds of no-braking cooling time.
- Repeat 6–8 times.
- Do 3 slower, lighter stops from 20 mph.
- Drive gently for the first 200 miles — avoid hard stops.
