2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Front CV Axle Replacement — Dana 30
I replaced the driver's side front CV axle on my 2018 JK Wrangler at 78,000 miles. The CV boot had split from an off-road hit, grease had flung everywhere, and the joint was clicking on tight turns within 4,000 miles. Classic failed CV. On a Jeep that sees dirt, this is a regular maintenance item — not a dealer job. Here's exactly how I do it.

Get the DIY Mechanic SystemThe 2018 Wrangler JK (not JL) uses a Dana 30 front axle with disconnect feature on the passenger side. Critical distinction:
- Driver's side (left): Standard CV axle, no disconnect
- Passenger side (right): Passes through the Disconnect Axle Housing (CAD) on Sport and Sahara models
This guide covers the driver's side front CV axle. If you have the Rubicon, the front axle is a Dana 44 — different part number, same procedure.

Buy a new axle nut (36mm prevailing torque). The factory nut is single-use. Mopar 06502777 or equivalent.
Tools Required
- Floor jack + jack stands
- Impact wrench or breaker bar + 36mm socket
- 13mm, 15mm, 18mm sockets
- Torque wrench (200+ ft-lb capacity)
- Ball joint separator
- Pry bar (for inner axle snap ring)
- Brass punch + hammer
- Shop rags
- 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil for Dana 30 top-off
Step-by-Step
1. Loosen the Axle Nut with Wheels Down
Before jacking, break loose the 36mm axle nut with the wheel planted. Don't remove yet.
2. Raise and Secure
Jack the Jeep at the front frame rail, support on jack stands. Remove wheel and tire.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper and Rotor
Remove caliper slide bolts (13mm), hang caliper with wire. Remove caliper bracket bolts (15mm). Remove rotor.
4. Disconnect the ABS Sensor Wire
Unclip the ABS wheel speed sensor wire from its bracket on the knuckle.
5. Remove the Axle Nut
Remove the 36mm axle nut completely. Discard — use a new one.
6. Separate the Lower Ball Joint
Remove the cotter pin, remove the castle nut (18mm), and use a ball joint press to pop the ball joint stud out of the knuckle. Don't hammer directly on the threaded stud.
7. Pivot the Knuckle Outward
With the lower ball joint disconnected, pull the knuckle outward and downward to create clearance. Push the axle shaft inward while pulling the hub/knuckle outward. The outer splines slide out of the hub bore.
8. Remove the Inner Axle
Use a pry bar positioned against the differential housing for leverage. Apply sharp outward force on the inner CV joint housing to pop the snap ring out of the differential groove. The snap ring releases with a click.
Watch for gear oil: when the inner axle pulls free, small amount of gear oil will run out. Have a rag ready.
9. Install the New CV Axle
Slide the inner end into the differential. Push firmly until you feel/hear the snap ring seat with a click. Tug outward to confirm it's locked in. Slide outer end through hub bore, thread new axle nut on hand-tight.
10. Reconnect the Ball Joint and Brakes
Re-engage lower ball joint, install castle nut, torque to 80 ft-lb (108 Nm), install new cotter pin. Reinstall rotor, caliper bracket (77 ft-lb), caliper slide bolts, ABS wire clip.
11. Torque the Axle Nut
Lower vehicle to ground. Torque new 36mm axle nut to 175 ft-lb (237 Nm). Torque lug nuts to 100 ft-lb (135 Nm).
12. Check Differential Oil Level
If oil drained, top off Dana 30 with 80W-90 GL-5. Fill plug torque: 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
13. Test Drive
Drive in tight circles both directions at walking speed. No clicking = success. Clicking in turns = inner snap ring not fully engaged.
Common Mistakes
1. Not replacing the axle nut. Single-use prevailing torque nut. A reused nut can back off under off-road load — losing steering is the result.
2. Under-torquing the axle nut. 175 ft-lb on a 4WD that sees rocks. Use a torque wrench.
3. Not verifying the inner snap ring seated. Tug the inner CV housing hard outward after install — should be immovable.
4. Forgetting to top off differential gear oil. The Dana 30 doesn't hold much. Running low on a wheeling trip accelerates differential wear fast.
