2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Oil Change — 5.3L EcoTec3 L83/L84

I've been doing oil changes on my 2019 Sierra 1500 since I bought it, and the 5.3L EcoTec3 has a few quirks you need to know about before you start. The biggest one: this engine requires Dexos1 Gen2 certified oil, and using a non-certified oil in a truck with AFM/DFM is a real risk. Here's the full procedure and why the oil spec matters more than you might think.

The 2019 Sierra 1500 5.3L came in two flavors:

  • L83 — Standard EcoTec3 5.3L, found in most Sierra 1500 trims
  • L84 — Active Fuel Management (AFM) + Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) variant

Both engines use the same oil spec and drain procedure. The oil capacity and change interval are identical. However, the L84 with DFM has a more complex AFM lifter system that is extremely sensitive to oil quality — more on that below.

The AFM/DFM Oil Warning

The 5.3L EcoTec3 uses Active Fuel Management (AFM) on the L83 and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) on the L84. These systems deactivate cylinders under light loads to improve fuel economy. The AFM/DFM lifters operate on oil pressure — they're hydraulic actuators that expand and collapse to disable cylinder valves.

Why this matters for your oil change:

  • Non-Dexos1-certified oil can cause AFM lifter failure. The lifter bores in these engines require specific anti-wear additive packages (ZDDP levels, friction modifiers) that are mandated by the Dexos1 Gen2 spec.
  • Failed AFM lifters on the 5.3L EcoTec3 are a well-documented problem — and the repair runs $2,500–$5,000.
  • Using Castrol Edge 5W-30 Dexos1, Mobil 1 5W-30 Dexos1, or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Dexos1 satisfies the spec. Confirm the Dexos1 Gen2 certification on the label — not just "Dexos" or "Dexos1."

Tools and Parts

  • 13mm socket (drain plug)
  • Oil filter wrench (for removal only — install by hand)
  • Oil drain pan (8+ quart capacity)
  • Funnel
  • 8 quarts of Dexos1 Gen2 5W-30 full synthetic
  • AC Delco PF64 oil filter (or FRAM PH10295 as a known-good aftermarket)
  • Torque wrench
  • Nitrile gloves

Step-by-Step Oil Change

Prep

  1. Run the engine for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more suspended contaminants out.

  2. Park on level ground. Engage the parking brake.

  3. Place your drain pan under the truck. The Sierra's ride height gives you good clearance — no jack needed for most owners.

Drain

  1. Locate the drain plug on the passenger-side rear of the oil pan. It's a 13mm hex plug.

  2. Break it loose counterclockwise, then hand-thread the last few turns — be ready to pull the plug away quickly when the oil starts flowing.

  3. Let it drain fully, 5–7 minutes.

  4. While draining, move to the oil filter. On the 5.3L EcoTec3, the spin-on filter is on the driver's side of the engine block. Use a filter wrench to break it loose, then spin off by hand.

  5. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Lightly oil the new filter's rubber gasket with clean oil. Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mount, then tighten 3/4 of a full turn more. Do not use a wrench to tighten the filter.

Refill

  1. Once oil flow has reduced to a drip, clean the drain plug and inspect the crush washer. The 2019 Sierra uses a reusable drain plug — replace the crush washer if it's flattened or scored. Reinstall and torque to 18 ft-lb.

  2. Remove the yellow oil fill cap on top of the engine (driver's side valve cover). Pour in 7.5 quarts of oil, wait 60 seconds, then check the dipstick.

  3. Bring the level to the "full" mark. Total capacity is 8.0 quarts with the filter change — add the remaining oil accordingly.

  4. Replace the fill cap. Start the engine and watch the oil pressure warning light. It should extinguish within 3–5 seconds.

  5. Let it idle for 90 seconds, then shut down and wait 5 minutes before rechecking the dipstick with the truck on level ground.

Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  1. Turn the key to "On" (not "Start") or push the Start button without touching the brake (engine off, accessories on).

  2. Press the Settings button on the steering wheel. Navigate to Vehicle Information → Oil Life. Press and hold the OK button until "Oil Life Reset" appears. Confirm.

  3. Alternatively, use the throttle-pedal method: key on, depress the accelerator to the floor three times within 5 seconds, key off.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 6 quarts. The 5.3L L83/L84 holds 8 quarts with a filter change. This is one of the most over-filled engines by first-timers going the other direction (under-fill) — but many people also confuse it with the older 5.3L LS-based engines that hold 6 quarts. Double-check: 8 quarts.

2. Using non-Dexos1 Gen2 oil. I can't stress this enough for the AFM/DFM trucks. The lifter design requires the specific additive package. A $10 savings on oil is not worth a $4,000 engine repair.

3. Overtightening the drain plug. 18 ft-lb on an aluminum oil pan is not much. Use a torque wrench — don't "feel" it.

4. Forgetting to reset the oil life monitor. The DIC won't reset itself, and "5% oil life" messages every startup are annoying.
