  • Battery group: Group 48 / H6 (BCI Group 48, European H6 equivalent)
  • CCA (Cold Cranking Amps): 760 CCA minimum
  • OEM battery: Mopar 68089030AH

  • Interstate MTX-48/H6 (760 CCA) — solid value
  • ACDelco 48AGM (760 CCA) — direct fit

The 2019 Cherokee uses a lot of electronics — stop/start system (on some trims), active noise cancellation, radio memory — so I prefer AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries. They cost $30–$50 more but are worth it on a Cherokee.

Memory Saver — Should You Use One?

A memory saver plugs into the OBD-II port and maintains a small current while the battery is disconnected, preserving radio presets, power window programming, and ECU learned parameters. For the 2019 Cherokee, I recommend using one. The Cherokee's electronics are complex enough that losing all learned adaptations can cause a rough-running condition for 50–100 miles.

Step-by-Step: Battery Replacement

  1. Turn off the ignition. If using a memory saver, plug it into the OBD-II port.
  2. Remove the battery cover (2–3 plastic push-pin retainers).
  3. Disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal first (black, "-") — 10mm bolt. Move the cable away from the terminal.
  4. Disconnect the POSITIVE terminal (red, "+") — same process.
  5. Remove the hold-down bracket (13mm bolt or nut).
  6. Lift out the old battery — it weighs 40–50 lbs.
  7. Inspect the battery tray and clean the terminal clamps of any corrosion.
  8. Lower the new battery into the tray in correct orientation.
  9. Reinstall the hold-down bracket — snug the bolt firmly.
  10. Connect the POSITIVE terminal first, then the NEGATIVE.
  11. Give each terminal a light tug to confirm they're seated.
  12. Reinstall the battery cover.

TIPM Reset Procedure

After a battery disconnect, the TIPM re-initializes on its own in most cases:

  1. With the new battery installed, do not start immediately — turn the key to ON for 2 minutes. Let all electronics initialize.
  2. Start the engine normally.
  3. Drive for 10–15 minutes including some stop-and-go to allow all systems to relearn.

If warning lights persist after a full drive cycle, check that both terminals are fully seated. Most codes clear within 1–2 drive cycles after battery replacement.
