With iridium, you can comfortably go 60,000–90,000 miles between changes — but if you're buying the car used or haven't tracked the plug history, doing them at 60K is cheap insurance for an engine that's known to be sensitive to ignition misfires.

- 6" extension
- 10mm socket (for ignition coil mounting bolts)
- Torque wrench (must reach down to 15 ft-lbs)
- Dielectric grease (small tube)
- Compressed air (to blow plug wells clean before removal)
- Connector pick or small flathead for coil connectors

Before You Start — 2.4L GDI Notes
The 2.4L GDI uses direct fuel injection, which means fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than into the intake port. This creates more carbon buildup on the back of intake valves over time, but it doesn't directly affect spark plug service beyond verifying you're seeing the right plug condition.
Normal GDI plug appearance: gray-tan electrode, clean center. If your plug tips show oil fouling or heavy carbon deposits across all four, there may be an underlying engine health issue worth investigating before replacing plugs and calling it done.
Kia uses coil-on-plug (COP) ignition — one ignition coil per cylinder, sitting directly on top of each plug. No plug wires to manage. The coil removal is straightforward.

Let the engine cool completely — At least 2 hours after driving. Working on hot aluminum heads is how threads get stripped.

Remove the engine cover — Trim-level dependent, but most 2019 Sorento 2.4L engines have a plastic beauty cover. It pops or bolts off. Set it aside.

Blow out the plug wells — Use compressed air around each spark plug well opening. Even a small amount of debris, water, or dirt falling into the cylinder after you remove the plug is a serious problem.

Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector — Each coil has a locking tab connector. Press the tab (toward the engine) and pull the connector straight up. On higher-mileage vehicles, these connectors are stiff — use a connector pick to release the tab rather than yanking the wire.

Remove the coil mounting bolt — Single 10mm bolt per coil. Counterclockwise to remove. Once the bolt is out, pull the coil straight up. If it's stuck (heat cycle adhesion between the coil boot and plug), twist gently while pulling — no prying.

Remove the spark plug — 5/8" plug socket with 6" extension, counterclockwise. The rubber insert grips the ceramic insulator for extraction from the deep plug well. Work each plug out slowly.

Inspect the old plugs — Compare all four side-by-side. They should look similar. Tan/gray = healthy combustion. Oil-fouled = ring or valve seal concern. Black/sooty = rich mixture. Severely worn electrode gap is your confirmation this was overdue.

Check the gap on new plugs — Pre-gapped NGK and Denso iridium plugs are correct for the 2.4L GDI, but verify with a feeler gauge: target gap is 0.039–0.043" (1.0–1.1mm). Iridium electrode tips are fragile — use a feeler gauge only, no gap tool that drags across the electrode.

Thread the new plug by hand — Start each plug by hand to avoid cross-threading. Thread until snug — 3–4 turns by hand.

Torque to 15 ft-lbs (20 Nm) — This is the Kia 2.4L spec. Less torque than most people expect. A calibrated torque wrench is non-negotiable on aluminum heads.

Apply dielectric grease to the coil boot — Small ring of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot at the tip of the coil. This prevents the boot from heat-bonding to the plug ceramic and makes future removal easier.

Reinstall coils — Seat the coil over the plug, press down, reinstall the 10mm bolt (snug — about 8 ft-lbs is typical), reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Reinstall engine cover, start engine — Should start clean. If you get a P030X misfire code immediately after starting, pull the coil on that cylinder and re-seat the connector — that's almost always the cause.
Pro Tips / Common Mistakes
- 15 ft-lbs is lower than you think — Most DIYers over-torque these plugs. Use a torque wrench every time. A plug you can't get out at the next service (or a stripped head thread) is an expensive problem.
- Verify iridium spec — Copper plugs are cheaper but require 30,000-mile service intervals. Iridium at 60K–90K is the better value on this engine.
- Don't forget dielectric grease — Skipping it means the boot may fuse to the plug at the next service. I've spent 20 minutes fighting a fused boot off a plug that should have taken 2 minutes to remove.
