- 8mm or 10mm wrench for bleeder screws (confirm your Equinox — GM uses 8mm bleed screws on most 2020 configurations)
- Clear tubing to fit over bleeder nipple
- Catch bottle
- Turkey baster or large syringe (to draw fluid from reservoir during flush)
- Torque wrench
- Jack and jack stands, lug nut socket

The 2020 Equinox ABS Bleed Sequence
The 2020 Chevy Equinox uses a four-wheel disc brake system with ABS. For a standard fluid flush, bleed in this sequence (farthest from master cylinder to closest):
- Right rear (farthest from master cylinder)
- Left rear
- Right front
- Left front (closest to master cylinder)
For a complete ABS module flush (if moisture-contaminated fluid has been in the system a long time), you'll need a GM Tech2-compatible scan tool to cycle the ABS pump and solenoids. For most routine flushes, gravity/pressure bleeding the four calipers is sufficient.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Locate the master cylinder reservoir — Under the hood, driver's side, near the firewall. DOT 3 brake fluid in a clear reservoir; you'll see the MIN and MAX marks through the sides.

Start with a clean reservoir — Use a turkey baster to draw the old fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir down to the MIN line. This removes the most degraded fluid and makes room for fresh fluid to flow down through the system as you bleed.

Fill reservoir with fresh DOT 3 — Fill to MAX with fresh, sealed DOT 3. Keep the reservoir full throughout the entire bleed process — never let it run dry, or you'll introduce air into the master cylinder.

Raise and support the vehicle — All four corners. Remove the wheels for easier access to the bleed screws.

Install bleeder valve or attach clear hose — On the right rear caliper, find the bleed screw (rubber dust cap on a small nipple, usually 8mm). If using speed bleeders, swap them in now (one at a time, don't leave a caliper open). If using a vacuum bleeder or gravity bleed method, attach your clear tubing over the nipple, other end into a catch bottle.

Open the bleed screw 1/2 to 3/4 turn — With a one-way valve installed, the valve prevents air from re-entering. Fluid will begin to flow out by gravity. If using a vacuum bleeder, apply suction with the hand pump.

Bleed until fluid runs clear and bubble-free — Old brake fluid is typically amber to dark brown. Fresh DOT 3 is nearly clear with a slight yellow tint. Run fluid until the color changes and no air bubbles appear in the clear tube — typically 6–8 oz per corner.

Close bleed screw — Torque to 62 in-lbs (7 Nm) — these are small fasteners and strip easily.

Top up master cylinder reservoir before moving to next corner.

Final reservoir fill — After all four corners are done, fill the master cylinder to the MAX mark with fresh DOT 3.

Pump the brake pedal — Before lowering the vehicle, pump the brake pedal 15–20 times until firm. Check the reservoir level again.

Check feel — The brake pedal should feel solid and high. A soft, spongy pedal indicates air in the system — re-bleed the corner(s) that feel spongy.
Post-Flush ABS System Note
After a standard brake flush on the 2020 Equinox, the ABS system is typically fine without additional cycling. However, if your ABS module was partially depleted of fresh fluid (common if you let the reservoir run dry accidentally), the ABS pump will need to self-prime on the next ABS activation event (a hard stop or icy-road ABS cycle). You may notice one brief "ABS activation" feeling during the first hard stop after service — this is normal.
Pro Tips / Common Mistakes
- Never let the master cylinder reservoir run dry — If you draw too much vacuum or leave a bleed screw open too long, air enters the master cylinder. This requires bench-bleeding the MC — a much bigger job.
- Keep DOT 3 off painted surfaces — Brake fluid dissolves paint on contact. Keep rags nearby and immediately wash any spills with water.
- Don't reuse fluid from the catch bottle — Old fluid drawn out is contaminated. Dispose of it properly (most auto parts stores accept used brake fluid).
- 8mm is the right size — Most GM bleed screws are 8mm. Don't attempt with a 10mm or 7mm — you'll round off the hex.
