The engine change also means different specs for the oil change: new capacity, new drain plug size, and a specific oil recommendation from Nissan that's worth understanding before you start.

The MR20DD Engine: What's Different

The MR20DD is a modern DOHC engine with Variable Valve Timing (CVTC) on both intake and exhaust. Staying on schedule with 0W-20 full synthetic is more important on engines like this than on older fixed-timing designs.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Warm the engine: Run for 3–5 minutes. Shut off, wait 5–10 minutes.

Access and Drain:

1. Lift the front of the Sentra with ramps or jackstands.
2. Remove the oil fill cap on the valve cover.
3. Locate the drain plug — bottom of the oil pan, center-rear, 14mm hex.
4. Position drain pan. Remove drain plug counter-clockwise. Drain fully — 4–5 minutes.

Replace the Filter: 5. Locate the oil filter on the driver's side of the engine block. 6. Remove the old filter counter-clockwise. Have rags ready for drips. 7. Check that the old filter gasket came off with the filter, not stuck to the block. 8. Prep new filter — thin coat of fresh 0W-20 on the rubber gasket. 9. Install new filter — hand-tight until gasket seats, then 3/4 turn more.

Reinstall Drain Plug: 10. Inspect the drain plug. Thread in by hand to avoid cross-threading. 11. Torque to 25 ft-lbs (34 Nm).

Fill: 12. Add 4.0 quarts through the valve cover fill port. 13. Start the engine for 30 seconds — oil pressure light should go out. 14. Check drain plug and filter for leaks. 15. Shut off, wait 3 minutes, check dipstick. Add remaining oil (likely 0.4–0.6 quarts) to bring to FULL.
