Step-by-Step: 2020 Subaru Outback Oil Change

Warm-Up:

Drain: 2. Safely lift the vehicle on ramps or jack stands. 3. Locate the drain plug — on the FB25D it's toward the rear of the oil pan on the driver's side. Easy to spot once you're under the car. 4. Fill: 8. Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine. 9. Add 5.0 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic to start. 10. Start the engine and idle for 30–60 seconds. The oil pressure warning light should go out within 5–10 seconds. If it stays on, shut off immediately and investigate. 11. With the engine warm (2–3 minutes at idle), shut it off. Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick. Add oil in 1/4-quart increments until the level reads in the upper half of the cross-hatched zone. Total fill is 5.4 quarts with filter change. 12. Reinstall the fill cap.

Reset the Oil Life Monitor: 13. Turn the ignition to ON (don't start the engine). 14. Push the trip reset button until the OIL light blinks, then hold for 5+ seconds until it resets. On models with the infotainment display: Settings → Vehicle → Maintenance.

Inspect While You're Down There

Since you're already under the Outback, take 60 seconds to look at:

• CV boot condition — torn boots leak grease and accelerate axle wear
