The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe with the EcoTec3 5.3L V8 is one of the most popular full-size SUVs in the country, and I've done this oil change on my own Tahoe enough times to have the process dialed in. It's a big engine — 8.0 quarts with filter — but the job itself is no more complicated than a 4-cylinder car. You need a proper drain pan with enough capacity, the right filter, and about 40 minutes. Dealers charge $150–$200 for this service. Your DIY parts cost: $70–$85.

The spec that matters most here: GM requires dexos1 Gen 2 certified 0W-20 full synthetic in the L84. This isn't optional — dexos1 Gen 2 certification means the oil meets GM's specific oxidation, LSPI (low-speed pre-ignition), and deposit-control standards for direct-injected engines with Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). Running a non-dexos1 oil in the L84 can increase LSPI risk and may affect AFM system longevity. Check the bottle for the dexos1 Gen 2 certification mark before buying.

Note: The drain plug torque on the L84 is lower than many people expect — 18 lb-ft. I've seen people reef the drain plug on this engine at 30+ lb-ft because they assumed a V8 needed more torque. It doesn't. The aluminum pan threads are the limiting factor here, not the plug. Use your torque wrench.

You save $70–$135 every oil change. On the L84's OLM interval — call it 8,500 miles average — that's a meaningful saving, particularly given how many Tahoe owners also tow trailers and RVs, which the OLM accounts for by shortening intervals under load.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Drive the Tahoe for 5–10 minutes to bring the oil to operating temperature. The L84's AFM system (cylinder deactivation) runs the oil through additional solenoid circuits — warm oil is thinner and drains more thoroughly from all these galleries. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes before working; the exhaust on a V8 this size gets very hot.

2. Get the Vehicle on Ramps or Stands

The 2021 Tahoe rides high enough that some mechanics skip ramps, but I strongly recommend them for comfortable access to the drain plug and filter. Position ramps under the front wheels, roll forward carefully, and set the parking brake before getting under the vehicle.

No factory underbody panels block the oil pan or filter on the 2021 Tahoe. Access is straightforward once the vehicle is raised.

3. Locate the Drain Plug and Filter

The 15mm drain plug is at the rear of the oil pan, on the driver's side, pointing straight down. It's a large, clearly visible plug. The ACDelco PF64 spin-on filter is on the passenger side of the engine, midblock, accessible from underneath. It faces rearward on most Tahoe installations.

4. Drain the Oil

Position your drain pan — confirm it holds at least 9 quarts before you start. Loosen the 15mm drain plug counterclockwise with a ratchet, then remove by hand. Keep light inward pressure on the plug as you remove the last few threads.

The L84 holds 8.0 quarts — allow 8–10 minutes for a full drain. The volume is larger than most V6 SUVs, so patience pays off here.

5. Remove the Old Filter

The PF64 is a standard spin-on filter. Most of the time it comes off by hand. If it was overtightened, use a strap wrench. Have a rag ready; residual oil in the filter will drip when it's removed.

6. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin coat of fresh 0W-20 to the rubber O-ring on the new PF64. Thread it on by hand until the gasket seats, then turn 3/4 turn additional. No wrench needed.

7. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread the drain plug back in by hand to confirm clean thread engagement. Torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm). This feels light for a V8 — but it is the correct spec. The aluminum oil pan on the L84 is the reason for the low torque figure.

If your drain plug is showing thread damage or the seating surface looks worn, replace it. The GM drain plug part number for the L84 is 11516162, which includes the integrated seal.

8. Fill with Oil

Open the oil filler cap on the driver's side valve cover (labeled ENGINE OIL). Pour in 7.0 quarts first. Start the engine, let it idle for 90 seconds — you want the oil to circulate through the AFM solenoids and filter before you check the level. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, pull the dipstick (driver's side front of the engine, yellow handle), and check. Add remaining oil to bring to the "MAX" mark. Total fill with filter is 8.0 quarts.

9. Start and Inspect

Start the engine. The oil pressure light extinguishes within 3–5 seconds on a healthy L84. Let it idle for 2–3 minutes and walk around to check the drain plug and filter housing for seepage. No drips should appear.

The L84's lifter tick at cold startup is normal — the AFM lifters take a few seconds to pressurize. If you hear significant clatter beyond 10–15 seconds of idle, it's worth investigating before the next drive.

10. Reset the Oil Life Monitor

In the 2021 Tahoe, press the checkmark button on the steering wheel to open the Driver Information Center (DIC). Navigate to Oil Life using the arrow buttons. When you're on the Oil Life screen, press and hold the checkmark button until the reset confirmation appears. Confirm to reset to 100%.

Alternatively, with the ignition on and engine off, press the accelerator pedal to the floor three times within five seconds — this is the traditional GM OLM reset method that also works on the 2021 Tahoe.

L84 AFM and Oil Notes

The EcoTec3 L84 uses Active Fuel Management — it deactivates four of its eight cylinders under light load to improve highway fuel economy. The AFM system uses dedicated oil pressure solenoids (lifter oil manifold assembly, or LOMA) to collapse the inner-layer lifters. This system is oil-pressure-sensitive.

Clean, properly viscosity-rated oil keeps the AFM solenoids operating reliably. Running degraded oil — or the wrong viscosity — is one of the most common contributors to L84 AFM lifter failures. The dexos1 Gen 2 spec directly addresses the deposit-control and stability requirements of the AFM system.
