Tools needed for both: floor jack + stands or ramps, 15mm socket, torque wrench, 74mm cap oil filter wrench, 7-qt drain pan, funnel, nitrile gloves.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Warm the Engine

Run engine 3–4 minutes. Park on level ground, wait 2 minutes before starting.

2. Lift and Access

The Bronco has excellent ground clearance. Drive onto heavy-duty ramps, or jack under the front/rear axle beam. Most Badlands and Wildtrak trims have front skid plates — remove (typically 4–6 bolts, 13–15mm + T40 Torx) for access.

3. Drain the Oil

Locate drain plug at the bottom center of the oil pan — 15mm hex for both engines. Position drain pan, break loose counterclockwise, remove by hand. Drain fully (5–10 minutes).

4. Remove the Oil Filter

The Motorcraft FL-500S is a cartridge-style filter. 2.3L: housing on driver's side near the top, accessible from above. 2.7L: housing on passenger side, lower position. Use a 74mm cap wrench. Remove cap, pull out old element, transfer or replace O-ring, install new element. Lightly oil O-ring with fresh oil.

5. Reinstall Drain Plug

Thread by hand, torque to 20 ft-lb (27 Nm). Don't over-torque the aluminum pan.

6. Add Oil

• 2.3L: 5.0 quarts 5W-30
• 2.7L: 6.0 quarts 5W-30

Add most of the oil, start briefly, check dipstick, top off to FULL.

7. Reset Oil Life Monitor

SYNC: navigate to Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life, hold OK to reset. Or: key to ON, full-pedal 3 times within 10 seconds.

Common Mistakes

Using 5W-20 instead of 5W-30 in the EcoBoost engines. Ford's older vehicles used 5W-20. The 2.3L and 2.7L EcoBoost in the Bronco require 5W-30 — confirmed in the 2021 owner's manual and engine bay cap. Many shops default to 5W-20 for all Fords. Check the label. Viscosity matters in turbocharged engines at elevated temperatures.

• Motorcraft Synthetic 5W-30 (PN XT-10-QSSP) is the factory-fill. Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1 5W-30 are also solid options.
