Tools: 5/8 in (16mm) spark plug socket, 3/8-drive 6-inch extension, ratchet, needle-nose pliers, dielectric grease.
Torque note: The Motorcraft SP-520 comes with a factory-applied thread lubricant — do NOT add anti-seize. Additional anti-seize changes the effective torque value and can strip the aluminum head. Install at exactly 13 lb-ft.

Step-by-Step Spark Plug Replacement
1. Let the Engine Cool
Let the engine cool completely — at minimum 2 hours after last running, ideally overnight. Aluminum head threads are easily damaged by overtightening on hot metal.
2. Remove the Engine Cover
Lift the plastic engine cover straight up — four to six friction-fit mounts. No tools required.
3. Disconnect Coil Connectors
Four coil-on-plug (COP) assemblies sit directly over each plug. Disconnect each connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight out. Work one cylinder at a time.
4. Remove the Coils
Each Motorcraft DG-511 coil is held by a single 8mm bolt. Remove the bolt, then pull the coil straight up with a slight rotation. Inspect each boot for cracks or carbon tracking — replace any damaged coil.
5. Remove the Old Plugs
Use the 5/8 in spark plug socket with a 6-inch extension. Counterclockwise. Thread out by hand once loose. Photograph each plug's condition — gray/tan is normal; black sooty indicates rich; white/blistered indicates lean or overheating.
6. Check the Plug Wells
Look into each well with a flashlight before installing new plugs. Any water, oil, or debris must be cleared first.
7. Install the New Plugs
Confirm the SP-520 gap is 0.032 in. Thread in by hand until finger-tight. Torque to 13 lb-ft (18 Nm). Trust the spec — 13 lb-ft into an aluminum head is correct.
8. Reinstall the Coils
Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot. Press each DG-511 coil over its plug until fully seated. Reinstall the 8mm bolt (approximately 5–7 Nm). Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.
9. Start and Verify
Reinstall the engine cover. Start the engine — it should idle smoothly. A misfire code (P030X) means a coil connector isn't fully seated. Shut off and recheck.
EcoBoost Notes
