2021 Honda CR-V Oil Change Guide — Step-by-Step

The 2021 Honda CR-V is available in two powertrains: the 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine and the 2.0L hybrid. Both use 0W-20 full synthetic, but there are important differences in capacity, procedure, and the notorious oil dilution concern on the 1.5T that every CR-V owner should understand before pulling the drain plug.

The Oil Dilution Issue on the 2021 CR-V 1.5T

Before you change the oil on a 2021 CR-V with the 1.5T, you need to know about oil dilution. In short-trip driving in cold weather, the 1.5T's direct injection system can leave small amounts of unburned gasoline that pass the piston rings and into the oil. This makes the oil level appear higher than expected on the dipstick and actually dilutes the oil's lubricating properties.

Honda issued TSB 19-087 for earlier CR-Vs and updated guidance through 2021 production. The 2021 model received revised piston rings and updated ECU logic that reduced (but did not entirely eliminate) the dilution concern.

How to check before your oil change:

1. Pull the oil dipstick before draining.
2. If the level reads above FULL — especially if you haven't added oil — that's a potential dilution indicator.
3. Smell the dipstick — diluted oil has a faint gasoline odor.
4. If both signs are present, Honda's guidance is to do a highway drive of 15–20 minutes at operating temperature before checking the level again. The heat helps evaporate entrained gasoline through the PCV system.
5. Document the condition if you're still under warranty.

Step-by-Step: Oil Change

Warm and Access:

1. Run the engine for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster.
2. Raise the vehicle on ramps or jackstands.
3. Remove the oil fill cap.

Drain: 4. Locate the drain plug — bottom center of the oil pan, 14mm. 5. Position drain pan. Remove drain plug counter-clockwise. 6. Allow full drainage — 4–5 minutes.

Filter Change: 7. Locate the oil filter on the driver's side of the engine block. 8. Remove the old filter counter-clockwise. 9. Check that the old gasket came off on the filter, not stuck to the block. 10. Oil the new filter's gasket with a thin coat of fresh 0W-20. 11. Install new filter — hand-tight until gasket seats, then 3/4 turn more by hand.

Reinstall Drain Plug: 12. Install fresh crush washer (Honda 94109-14000). 13. Thread in drain plug by hand, then torque to 29 ft-lbs (39 Nm).

Fill: 14. Add oil: 1.5T: start with 3.5 quarts | Hybrid: start with 4.0 quarts 15. Start the engine for 30 seconds — oil pressure light should extinguish immediately. 16. Check for leaks. Shut off, wait 3 minutes, check dipstick. 17. Bring level to FULL mark with remaining oil in small increments.

2. Navigate to "Engine Oil Life" via the INFO button or touchscreen
3. Hold the INFO/SELECT button for 10 seconds until oil life blinks
4. Press again to confirm reset to 100%
