2021 Kia K5 2.5T Oil Change — DIY Guide
2021 Kia K5 2.5T Oil Change — DIY Guide
Kia dealers charge $100–$140 for a K5 2.5T Turbo oil service; the DIY cost is around $50. The K5 GT-Line and GT trim's G4KH 2.5T engine has a specific oil requirement that differs from the base 1.6T — it calls for 0W-30, not 0W-20, due to the higher thermal load of the twin-scroll turbocharger.

| Item | OEM / Spec | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter | Kia 26320-2S000 | Cartridge filter, top of engine |
| Drain plug gasket | Kia 21513-23001 | Single-use crush washer |
| Motor oil | 0W-30 full synthetic | API SP or ILSAC GF-6B certified |
| Capacity | 5.3 qt (5.0 L) with filter | G4KH 2.5L Turbo |
| Drain plug torque | 26 lb-ft (35 Nm) | 17mm hex |
Additional tools: 17mm socket, cartridge filter housing wrench (27mm hex on the housing cap), drain pan (6-quart minimum), funnel, torque wrench.
Oil note: The G4KH 2.5T is a high-output engine producing 290 hp. Kia specifically requires 0W-30 — not 0W-20. The heavier 30-weight base is needed for turbocharger bearing protection and cylinder wall film strength at operating temperatures. Hyundai/Kia-brand 0W-30, Castrol Edge 0W-30, and Mobil 1 0W-30 EP all meet the spec. Do not substitute 0W-20 — this is one of the few modern Hyundai/Kia engines where the viscosity specification genuinely matters for longevity.
Filter note: The 26320-2S000 cartridge is located on top of the engine. This design is shared with the Hyundai Sonata N Line 2.5T — filter elements are interchangeable.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the K5 for 5–7 minutes. The turbocharged G4KH benefits especially from warm-oil draining — warm synthetic flows cleanly and leaves minimal residue in the turbo oil feed passages.
2. Access the Top-Mount Filter First
The cartridge filter housing is accessible from the top of the engine with the hood open. Use a 27mm socket or filter housing wrench to remove the cap (counterclockwise). Pull out the old 26320-2S000 filter element. A rag beneath the housing catches any residual drips.
3. Install the New Filter Element and O-Ring
Insert the new 26320-2S000 element into the housing — it only fits one way due to the indexing tab. Replace the O-ring on the housing cap with the one included in the filter kit. Do not reuse the old O-ring. Reinstall the housing cap and torque to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) — do not overtighten.
4. Raise the Vehicle
Use a floor jack and jack stands or ramps to access the underbody. Locate the oil pan under the engine — the 17mm drain plug is toward the rear of the pan.
5. Drain the Oil
Slide your 6-quart drain pan into position. Remove the drain plug counterclockwise. The G4KH's 5.3-quart capacity requires a 6-quart or larger pan. Allow 10 minutes for a complete drain.
Remove and discard the old Kia 21513-23001 crush washer.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Thread in the new crush washer and plug by hand. Torque to 26 lb-ft (35 Nm). The G4KH oil pan is aluminum — this is a lighter torque than it feels like. A torque wrench is important.
7. Add Oil
Add 5.0 quarts of 0W-30 through the oil filler cap on the driver-side valve cover. Start the engine — oil pressure light out within 5 seconds. Idle 90 seconds. Shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick and top up. Final capacity is 5.3 quarts with filter.
8. Check for Leaks
Inspect the filter housing and drain plug. Run at idle 2 minutes. The turbo system adds oil pressure spikes on startup — the filter cap O-ring is the most common leak point on this engine if not replaced.
9. Check the Turbo Cooldown Practice
After every highway drive, let the K5 idle for 60–90 seconds before shutting off. This lets the turbo's oil feed cool the bearings before oil circulation stops. Abrupt shutoffs on a hot turbo cause oil coking in the bearings — a major failure mode on any turbocharged car.
10. Reset the Service Indicator
In the 2021 K5: Settings → Vehicle → Service Interval → Reset. Alternatively, with ignition ON (not running), press the accelerator pedal 3 times in 10 seconds.
2.5T vs. 1.6T Oil Change Differences
If you also service a K5 with the base 1.6T engine (Smartstream G1.6T-GDi), note that it uses 0W-20, not 0W-30, and a different filter (Kia 26300-35504). Always confirm your engine code before purchasing fluids. The 2.5T is exclusive to the GT-Line AWD and GT trims.
