2021 Toyota Camry 2.5L Oil Change — A8 Engine, 0W-16, Step-by-Step DIY Guide

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine (5 minutes)

Drive the Camry for 5–10 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants with it. Don't work on a hot engine — warm is the target.

2. Raise the Vehicle and Access the Drain

The 2021 Camry has factory jack points at the pinch welds. Use jack stands under the rear pinch weld points once lifted. You can also do this on ramps.

The drain plug is on the driver's side of the oil pan, facing rearward. It takes a 14mm socket. Position your drain pan ahead of where you think it'll drain — oil shoots forward when the plug first releases.

3. Remove the Drain Plug and Washer

Break the plug loose with your breaker bar, then spin it off by hand. Catch the washer — don't let it drop into the dirty oil. Discard it. Let the oil drain fully (5–7 minutes).

4. Remove the Oil Filter

The cartridge filter is accessed from the top, on the driver's side of the engine. You'll see a black plastic cap with a hex fitting on top. Use a 64mm Toyota filter wrench to loosen it counterclockwise.

Pull the cap straight up — the old filter element comes with it. Remove the O-ring from the cap (there are two: a large outer O-ring and a smaller inner one). Install the new O-rings from the filter kit, then insert the new filter element into the housing.

Pro tip: A collapsible silicone funnel placed around the filter housing catches any drips when you pull the cap — the housing sits in a recessed valley and oil loves to run down the back of the block.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Install a new aluminum crush washer on the drain plug threads. Hand-tighten the plug, then torque to 27 lb-ft (37 Nm). Do not overtighten — the aluminum pan threads are easily damaged.

6. Reinstall the Filter Cap

Thread the filter cap back in by hand until snug, then torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm). There's a torque spec marked on the cap itself on some Camry variants.

7. Add Oil

Remove the oil filler cap (top of engine, driver's side). Add 4.5 quarts of 0W-16 full synthetic first, then check the dipstick. Top off to the "F" mark as needed — total capacity is 4.8 quarts with filter, but always verify with the dipstick.

Use a funnel here. The fill port on the Dynamic Force engine is slightly recessed and easy to miss at an angle.

8. Start and Check for Leaks

Start the engine and let it idle for 60 seconds. Check under the car for leaks at the drain plug and under the engine bay at the filter housing. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, recheck the dipstick, and top off if needed.

9. Reset the Maintenance Light

In the 2021 Camry, hold the TRIP button until the odometer displays "ODO." Turn the ignition off. Hold the TRIP button, then turn the ignition on (don't start the engine). Keep holding the TRIP button for approximately 5 seconds until the maintenance light flashes and resets.

What Happens If You Skip the Oil Change?

The A25A-FKS is a high-compression, Atkinson-cycle engine. It runs hotter and works harder than most naturally aspirated fours. Running past 10,000 miles on degraded 0W-16 accelerates wear on variable valve timing (VVT) components and the variable displacement oil pump. Both are expensive repairs. Stick to the interval.
