2022 Honda Civic Thermostat Replacement — 1.5T L15CA Engine
I replaced the thermostat on my 2022 Civic after the temp gauge started running cooler than normal and the heater stopped putting out full heat in cold weather — both classic signs of a thermostat stuck open. The 1.5T L15CA in the 11th-gen Civic uses an integrated thermostat housing assembly. Here's exactly how I do it.

Note: Honda sells the thermostat as part of the housing assembly on the L15CA — you don't buy just a thermostat element. The Honda 19301-6A0-A01 includes the thermostat, gasket, and housing.

Step-by-Step
1. Let the Engine Cool
Fully cold engine only. Wait 2+ hours after last drive.
2. Drain Some Coolant
Open the radiator drain cock (bottom driver's side of radiator). Drain ~2–3 quarts. Remove the radiator cap to speed draining.
3. Locate the Thermostat Housing
On the 2022 Civic 1.5T (L15CA), the thermostat housing is on the passenger side of the engine block, near the firewall. Connected to two coolant hoses, three mounting bolts.
4. Remove the Coolant Hoses
Squeeze and slide back the spring clamps on both hoses. Wiggle and pull hoses off housing nipples. Have rags ready for residual coolant.
5. Remove the Thermostat Housing
Remove the three 10mm bolts. Pull the housing straight off. Scrape old gasket off the engine block face with a plastic scraper only — don't gouge the aluminum.
6. Install the New Housing
New assembly includes a new gasket. Place gasket on engine block mating surface. Thread in three bolts finger-tight. Torque to 9 ft-lb (12 Nm) in a cross pattern. Do not overtighten into aluminum.
7. Reconnect Coolant Hoses
Slide hoses back onto housing nipples. Reposition spring clamps above the bead on each nipple.
8. Close the Drain and Refill
Close the drain cock. Pour Honda Blue Type 2 OAT (50/50 premix) into the radiator fill. Fill the overflow reservoir to MAX cold line.
9. Bleed the Air
- Leave radiator cap off
- Start engine
- Set heater to maximum heat, fan on high
- Let idle until thermostat opens — temp gauge rises to normal
- Add coolant as level drops while air purges
- Once upper radiator hose gets hot, top off and replace cap
- Check reservoir after first cool-down
10. Test Drive
Drive 10–15 minutes. Temp gauge should sit steady at normal position. Heater output should be strong in heat mode.
Common Mistakes
1. Cracking the housing bolts. At 9 ft-lb, these are easy to overtorque into aluminum. Use a torque wrench — stripped holes need helicoil repair.
2. Skipping the air bleed. An air pocket causes temp gauge spikes and overheating at idle. After any cooling system work, the air bleed is not optional.
3. Not using Honda Blue OAT coolant. The 11th-gen Civic uses blue OAT (Honda 08C50-C321S02). Don't substitute green conventional, orange Dex-Cool, or pink Toyota SLLC. All are incompatible.
4. Reusing the old gasket. Old gasket is compressed and deformed. Reusing causes a coolant seep at the housing joint within weeks. New housing assembly includes a new gasket — use it.
