Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine (5–7 minutes)

2. Locate the Drain and Filter

Pull the cap out and up — the filter element comes with it. Remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap grooves. Install new O-ring(s) from the filter kit. Push the new filter element into the cap, ensuring it's fully seated.

Critical: Never reinstall a cartridge filter housing without replacing the O-rings. Even if they look fine, an oil-compressed O-ring will leak at the next heat cycle.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Install the new Hyundai/Kia 21513-23001 aluminum crush washer. Thread the drain plug in by hand, then torque to 26 lb-ft (35 Nm).

6. Reinstall the Filter Cap

Thread the filter cap back in clockwise until it seats. Torque to 17.4 lb-ft (24 Nm). Use a torque wrench — the plastic filter housing threads on the G2.5T can crack if overtightened by feel.

7. Add Oil

Pour in 4.5 quarts first, then start the engine, run for 60 seconds, shut off. Wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back. Check the dipstick — add the remaining ~0.6 quarts to reach the "F" mark. The G2.5T is particularly specific about filling in two steps because of its engine bay layout and oil gallery design.

8. Start and Inspect

Start the engine. The oil pressure light should extinguish within 5 seconds. Let it idle 2 minutes. Check the drain plug area and filter housing for any drips. Look at the top of the engine around the filter housing — a small drip from a loose filter cap is easy to spot here before it becomes a mess.

9. Reset the Maintenance Minder

In the 2022 Sorento, use the steering wheel INFO button to navigate to Vehicle Info → Maintenance → Oil. Select RESET and confirm. The wrench icon clears from the dashboard.
