2022 Subaru Legacy 2.5L CVT Oil Change — DIY Guide
Subaru dealers charge $80–$120 for a Legacy oil service; the DIY cost is around $40. The 2022 Legacy uses the naturally-aspirated FB25D engine — a horizontally-opposed "boxer" 2.5L that requires a few small adjustments to the standard oil change routine compared to a conventional inline engine.

Oil note: Subaru specifies 0W-20 full synthetic for the FB25D in the 2022 Legacy. Idemitsu 0W-20, Mobil 1 0W-20, and Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 all meet spec. The FB25D is a naturally-aspirated engine with low thermal stress — 0W-20 works year-round in all climates for this application.
Filter note: The SOA868V9210 is a cartridge filter located at the top of the engine on the passenger side. Subaru's cartridge design eliminates the "hot oil spill" problem common with spin-on filters — the element sits above the oil level.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the Legacy for 5 minutes. Warm oil drains completely; cold oil leaves behind about 10% more contaminated residue. Park level and set the parking brake.
2. Pop the Hood and Access the Filter First
Unlike spin-on filter designs, the Subaru SOA868V9210 cartridge is accessed from the top of the engine. Remove the filter housing cap with your 64mm filter wrench (counterclockwise). Pull the old filter element straight out. The housing will contain a small amount of oil — have a rag ready, but the top-mount design means very little oil spills.
Place the new SOA868V9210 element in the housing. The element has an orientation notch that indexes into the housing base. Note: do not pre-fill the cartridge housing with oil. The Subaru cartridge design primes from the engine on startup.
3. Install the New O-Ring
The filter housing kit includes a new O-ring for the cap. Install it before reinstalling the cap. Do not reuse the old O-ring — they take a compression set after one heat cycle.
4. Reinstall the Filter Cap
Thread the housing cap back in clockwise and torque to 14 lb-ft (19 Nm). This is the cap torque — do not overtighten. Finger-tight plus 1/4 turn is sufficient.
5. Raise the Car and Drain
Use a floor jack and jack stands or ramps. Slide your drain pan under the oil pan. The 17mm drain plug is at the bottom of the engine oil pan, accessible from below.
Loosen the plug counterclockwise. Remove by hand with slight inward pressure. The 5.1-quart FB25D takes 8–10 minutes to drain fully. Remove and discard the old 803916010 copper crush washer.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install the new copper crush washer and thread the plug in by hand. Torque to 33 lb-ft (45 Nm). The copper washer deforms slightly to create the seal — do not reuse old washers.
7. Lower the Car and Add Oil
Lower the Legacy back to level ground. Add 4.8 quarts of 0W-20 through the oil filler cap on the passenger-side valve cover. Start the engine — oil pressure light extinguishes within 5 seconds.
Idle for 90 seconds. Shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick (driver-side). Top up to the full mark — final capacity with filter is 5.1 quarts.
8. Inspect for Leaks
Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes. Check the top-mount filter cap and the drain plug. The filter cap is a common leak source if the O-ring was omitted or the cap was cross-threaded.
9. Drive and Recheck
After your first drive of 5–10 miles, park on a clean surface and recheck the oil level and both seal points.
10. Reset the Maintenance Reminder
In the 2022 Legacy with the 11.6-inch infotainment screen: Settings → Maintenance → Reset Oil Change. For vehicles without the reset menu, consult the owner's manual — most 2022 Legacy models support the pedal sequence reset (ignition ON, accelerator pedal 3× within 10 seconds).
CVT Fluid Note
This guide covers the engine oil change only. The 2022 Legacy's CVT (Lineartronic) requires separate transmission fluid maintenance — Subaru CVTF-II, approximately 3.7 quarts for a drain-and-fill.
