I'll be honest — brake pads on a hybrid vehicle intimidated me at first. The regenerative braking system on the RAV4 Hybrid means the mechanical brakes work less than on a conventional car, which actually means your pads last longer. But when they do wear out, the replacement procedure has a few quirks worth knowing before you start.

Before getting into specs, one critical point: the RAV4 Hybrid rear calipers are actuated electrically, not hydraulically. The electronic parking brake (EPB) system uses a motor inside the rear caliper to apply clamping force. This means you cannot push the rear caliper piston in with a C-clamp like a conventional brake job.
To retract the rear piston, you need:
- A Toyota TechStream scan tool — or —
- A universal EPB service tool (Autel EPB cable, Foxwell NT604, or similar ~$40–$80 OBDII EPB adapter)
The front calipers are conventional hydraulic — front pads compress normally with a C-clamp or brake piston tool.

What You'll Need
- New front and rear brake pads
- EPB service tool (for rear pistons only)
- 12mm socket (caliper slide pins)
- 14mm socket (caliper carrier bolts)
- Torque wrench
- C-clamp or brake piston tool (front only)
- Brake cleaner spray
- High-temp brake lubricant (for slide pins and backing plates — NOT on rotor or pad face)
- Wire brush
- Jack + stands, lug wrench
Step-by-Step: Front Brake Pads
1. Loosen Lug Nuts
Loosen lug nuts on both front wheels while on the ground. Then lift the vehicle and secure on jack stands.
2. Remove the Wheel
Remove lug nuts and wheel. Set aside.
3. Inspect the Rotor
Before touching anything: check rotor thickness and surface condition. The 2022 RAV4 Hybrid's front rotors are 255mm diameter. Minimum thickness is stamped on the hat. Score grooves deeper than 0.6mm = replace rotors.
4. Remove the Caliper
Remove the two 12mm caliper slide pin bolts on the back of the caliper bracket. Slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it from the suspension with a wire hook — don't let it hang by the brake hose.
5. Remove the Old Pads
Slide the old pads out of the caliper carrier. Note the orientation of the shims and anti-squeal hardware — photograph before removing.
6. Compress the Front Piston
Use a C-clamp or brake piston tool to push the single hydraulic piston back into the caliper. Open the reservoir cap first to relieve pressure. Compress slowly.
7. Clean and Lubricate
Wire brush the pad contact areas on the carrier. Apply a thin coat of brake caliper lubricant to the slide pin bores and the contact points on the carrier where the pad backing plates slide. Zero lubricant on rotors or pad friction material.
8. Install New Pads and Reassemble
Install new pads into carrier. Reinstall caliper. Torque slide pin bolts to 25 lb-ft.
Step-by-Step: Rear Brake Pads (EPB)
1. Enter EPB Service Mode
Connect your EPB tool to the OBDII port. For Autel/Foxwell tools, navigate to Toyota > EPB > Rear Caliper > Enter Service Mode. The caliper pistons will retract automatically via the electric motor in the caliper.
This takes about 30 seconds per side. The caliper piston must be in service mode before you can remove the caliper.
2. Remove Caliper and Pads
Same as front: remove slide pin bolts (12mm), hang caliper safely, remove pads.
3. Inspect Rotors
Rear rotors on the RAV4 Hybrid are 260mm diameter. Because hybrid regenerative braking reduces mechanical brake use, rear rotors are often in better shape than fronts — but check them anyway for thickness and runout.
4. Install New Rear Pads
Install new pads, clean slides, lubricate contact points.
5. Exit EPB Service Mode
With caliper bolts torqued and wheel installed, reconnect the EPB tool and select Exit Service Mode. The piston will re-engage to the correct running clearance. This step is required — skipping it leaves the parking brake nonfunctional.
6. Torque Everything
- Caliper slide pin bolts: 25 lb-ft
- Lug nuts: 76 lb-ft (103 Nm)
7. Bed the Pads
New pads must be bedded. Drive to ~35 mph, apply moderate braking pressure to ~5 mph. Repeat 6–8 times with 30 seconds of cooling between applications. This transfers a thin film of pad material to the rotor surface and seats the pads properly.

Common Mistakes
1. Trying to compress the rear piston without an EPB tool. You'll damage the electric motor in the caliper. The rear pistons on EPB calipers must be retracted electrically.
2. Skipping exit service mode. The parking brake won't apply correctly if you don't exit EPB service mode. The caliper piston needs to return to operating position.
3. Getting lubricant on the rotor. Any contamination on the rotor face or pad friction surface will glaze and cause permanent brake judder. Clean brake cleaner only on those surfaces.
4. Not bedding the new pads. Unground pads wear unevenly and squeal. The 6-minute bedding procedure matters.
