What You'll Need
- ACDelco dexos1 Full Synthetic 0W-20 — 8 quarts (the 5.3L takes a full 8 quarts, not the 5–6 of most cars)
- ACDelco PF64 oil filter or equivalent (Bosch D3332, Fram TG7317A)
- 15mm socket for drain plug
- Oil drain pan — 10-quart capacity minimum (don't use a 5-quart drain pan on a V8)
- Torque wrench
- Oil filter strap wrench (optional)
- Funnel
- Ramps or jack + stands
Notes on the 5.3L EcoTec3
The L82 (non-AFM) and L84 (with Dynamic Fuel Management) both use the same oil spec. If your truck has AFM or DFM cylinder deactivation, the lifter oiling system requires proper viscosity — do not substitute 5W-30 for 0W-20 on a DFM engine.
The 2023 Silverado 1500 5.3L holds 8 full quarts. This catches a lot of people off guard — buy 8, not 5.
Step-by-Step
1. Run the Engine First
Idle 3–4 minutes to warm the oil. Shut off. Wait 5 minutes. You want warm, not scorching.
2. Raise the Truck
Ramps work great on Silverados — the front end has plenty of clearance. Get the truck level enough that the oil drains fully without pooling.
3. Locate the Drain Plug
Drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan at the rear driver's side. 15mm bolt. Position a 10-quart drain pan underneath before you break it loose.
4. Drain the Oil
Remove the drain plug counterclockwise. Let it drain 8–10 minutes. Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine while it drains — speeds up flow.
5. Remove the Oil Filter
The PF64 filter is on the passenger side of the engine block. Spin counterclockwise. Have a rag ready — the PF64 holds about half a quart of oil when you remove it.
Wipe the filter seating surface clean. Lightly oil the new filter's rubber gasket. Hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Thread in by hand, then torque to 18 lb-ft. No crush washer needed on the 5.3L — the drain plug has a built-in sealing face. Don't overtighten or you'll deform the pan threads.
7. Fill with New Oil
Pour in 7.5 quarts first. Start the engine, let it idle 30 seconds, shut off, wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick. Top off to the FULL mark — typically another 0.5 quart to reach the full 8.0-quart capacity.
8. Check for Leaks
Idle 2 minutes, then shut off and inspect the drain plug and filter base. The 5.3L idles at low pressure — any drip here will be visible quickly.
9. Reset the Oil Life Monitor
On the Driver Information Center (DIC):
- Press the Info button until "Oil Life" displays
- Press and hold Reset/Check for 5 seconds
- Monitor resets to 100%
Some 2023 models use the touchscreen — go to Vehicle > Diagnostics > Oil Life and reset from there.

Common Mistakes
1. Buying only 5 quarts. The 5.3L takes 8 quarts. Every time. Don't run to the parts store mid-job.
2. Using 5W-30 instead of 0W-20. GM specs dexos1 0W-20 for fuel economy and DFM system performance. The wrong viscosity degrades DFM lifter performance over time.
3. Not using dexos1-licensed oil. GM dexos1 Gen 3 is a specific certification — not all 0W-20 synthetics qualify. Look for the dexos1 logo or ACDelco-branded oil.
4. Using a small drain pan. A 5-quart pan on an 8-quart engine makes a mess. Use a 10-quart pan minimum.
