Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine (3–4 minutes)

Run the Escape for 3–4 minutes, then shut off and wait 5 minutes. The EcoBoost turbo especially benefits from warm oil drainage — the oil carries combustion byproducts and metallic debris more effectively when it's at operating temperature.

2. Lift the Vehicle

The 2023 Escape sits low — you'll need ramps or jack stands to access the underside. Use the front subframe for jack stand placement; check your owner's manual for pinch weld locations. Remove the plastic belly pan under the engine if equipped (4–6 push-pin clips and/or 10mm bolts).

3. Drain the Oil

Position your drain pan under the 15mm drain plug at the rear of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise — pull cleanly as the last thread exits to avoid the oil stream.

The 4.3-quart sump drains fast — 5–6 minutes is usually sufficient. Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine to speed drainage.

5. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 to the new filter's O-ring. Thread on hand-tight, then add ¾ of a turn. No filter wrench for tightening.

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug

The 2023 Escape uses a drain plug that often doesn't require a crush washer replacement (Ford's design reuses the steel plug with a built-in seal on many configurations). However, if you see seepage at the plug after the job, install a Motorcraft YC-45 copper washer. Torque the drain plug to 20 lb-ft — not more; the Escape oil pan is aluminum.

7. Fill with 0W-20

Add 4.0 quarts first. Replace the filler cap, start the engine, idle for 60 seconds. Shut off, wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick. The total capacity is 4.3 quarts with filter — add the remaining 0.3 quart incrementally and recheck the dipstick.

Overfill warning: 4.3 quarts is tight. If the dipstick reads above MAX after 4.0 quarts, stop there. EcoBoost engines with overfill can develop oil consumption and seal issues under boost pressure.

8. Inspect for Leaks

With the engine idling, check both the drain plug and the oil filter from below with a flashlight. No drips = good to go. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, final dipstick check.

9. Reset the Ford Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor

On the 2023 Ford Escape:

1. Navigate to the main cluster menu using the steering wheel controls
2. Scroll to Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset
