Notes on the 1.5T
Oil spec matters on a turbo engine. Honda specifies 0W-20 full synthetic. Do not use 5W-20 or 5W-30 — the 0W-20 flows faster on cold startup, which is when most turbocharger wear happens.
The Maintenance Minder tells you when to change it. Honda's system monitors driving conditions and tells you when the oil actually needs changing — not just at a fixed mileage interval. Trust it. On highway-heavy driving, you might hit 7,500–8,000 miles on a full synthetic oil change. On short trips and city driving, it may flag at 4,500 miles.
Drain plug torque: 29 lb-ft. The 2023 CR-V uses an aluminum oil pan. Respect the torque spec — stripped aluminum oil pan threads cost $400+ to repair.
Step-by-Step
1. Warm the Oil
Run the engine 3–4 minutes. Shut off and wait 5 minutes. Warm oil flows freely.
2. Raise the CR-V
Ramps or jack + stands. The 2023 CR-V Sport, EX, and Touring have standard ground clearance — most people fit under on ramps. Locate the correct lift points before jacking.
3. Locate the Drain Plug
Drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan at the rear driver's side. 17mm bolt. Place your drain pan under it before you turn anything.
4. Drain the Oil
Remove plug counterclockwise. The 1.5T drain flows quickly — make sure your pan is positioned right. Let it drain 6–8 minutes.
While draining, remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine (labeled OIL, accessible without removing the engine cover). This vents the system and speeds drainage.
5. Replace the Oil Filter
The filter is on the driver's side of the engine block, down low. Spin counterclockwise to remove. Have a rag underneath — the filter holds about a cup of oil.
Clean the filter base with a rag. Lightly coat the new gasket with fresh oil. Hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn. No wrench.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Thread in by hand first — aluminum threads cross-thread easily if you force it. Torque to 29 lb-ft. The drain plug has a crush washer; Honda recommends replacing it each time. Replacement crush washers (Honda 94109-14000) are under $2 each at the dealer parts counter or online.
7. Fill with New Oil
Pour in 3.5 quarts. Start the engine, idle 30 seconds, shut off, wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick. The 1.5T takes 3.9 quarts — add a bit more to reach FULL on the dipstick.
8. Check for Leaks
With the engine idling, check around the drain plug and filter. The 1.5T runs higher oil pressure than a naturally aspirated engine — any leak will appear quickly.
9. Reset the Maintenance Minder
From the home screen on the instrument cluster:
- Press the Info button on the steering wheel until you see Oil Life %
- Press and hold the Reset button (center of info buttons) for about 10 seconds
- The display will flash and reset to 100%
Alternatively, via touchscreen: Go to Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info, select Oil Life, and choose Reset.

Common Mistakes
