How to Change Your 2023 Honda Passport 3.5L V6 Oil — DIY Guide

Oil note: The J35Y6 requires 0W-20 full synthetic meeting Honda HTO-06 spec. Honda Genuine 0W-20 is the OE fill; Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20, Mobil 1 0W-20, and Castrol Edge 0W-20 all meet spec.

Filter note: The Honda 15400-PLM-A02 is on the driver's side of the engine near the bottom — accessible from below. A Honda-specific 65mm cap filter wrench makes this much cleaner.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Engine

Run the Passport 5–7 minutes. The J35Y6's 5.7-qt capacity drains completely in about 8 minutes when warm.

2. Raise the Vehicle

Use ramps or a floor jack with stands. The filter requires access from below.

3. Remove the Oil Filter

Locate the Honda 15400-PLM-A02 spin-on filter on the driver's side lower engine block. Use a 65mm cap wrench to loosen counterclockwise. Unscrew fully and remove.

4. Drain the Oil

Move to the 17mm drain plug at the bottom rear of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Drain 8–9 minutes. Remove and discard the old Honda 94109-14000 aluminum drain plug washer.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread a new 94109-14000 aluminum sealing washer onto the drain plug. Torque to 33 lb-ft (44 Nm).

6. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 to the rubber gasket of the new 15400-PLM-A02 filter. Thread in by hand. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn — do not use a wrench.

7. Lower the Vehicle

Safely lower the Passport.

8. Add Oil

Add 5.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in 2–3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick and add remaining ~0.7 qt. Final capacity with filter is 5.7 quarts.

9. Check for Leaks

With the engine running, check the filter and drain plug.

10. Reset the Maintenance Minder

On the 2023 Honda Passport: With the ignition in ON, press and hold the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds until the OIL LIFE resets to 100%.


2023 Honda Passport J35Y6 Notes

  1. Direct injection and intake valves: The J35Y6 uses direct injection. Direct injection engines can accumulate carbon on intake valves over time. A periodic intake valve inspection after 100,000 miles is worthwhile.
  2. 5,000-mile intervals: Service at 30–40% oil life indicator for optimal protection rather than waiting for the 15% warning.
  3. Drain plug washer: Always replace the 94109-14000 aluminum washer — Honda drain plug washers are designed as crush seals.
