Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine (5 minutes)
Idle the Elantra for 5 minutes or drive it briefly. The Nu 2.0 warms up fast, and slightly warm oil drains completely in 5–6 minutes versus 10+ minutes on a cold engine.
Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap (top of engine, labeled with the oil can symbol) to allow air to enter and speed up the drain.
2. Access the Drain Plug
The 2023 Elantra has a minimal underbody shield. On most variants, you can access the drain plug from under the passenger side without removing any panels. The drain plug is on the passenger side of the oil pan.
Use a floor jack and jack stands, or drive onto ramps. The Elantra sits low — ramps are easier.
3. Drain the Oil
Position your drain pan, break the 14mm drain plug loose counterclockwise, and remove by hand. Let the oil drain 5–6 minutes. The Elantra only has 4.2 quarts — it drains faster than larger-displacement engines.
Remove the aluminum drain plug washer and discard it. These are Hyundai's standard aluminum crush-type — they cost about $1 each and the leak prevention they provide is worth every penny.
4. Remove the Oil Filter
The Hyundai 26320-2AAA0 is a cartridge filter in a plastic housing. It's located on top of the engine, driver's side, accessible from above without going underneath. Use a 27mm socket to loosen the housing cap counterclockwise.
Lift the cap out — the filter element comes with it. Remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap. Install new O-ring(s) from the filter kit. Insert the new filter element into the cap, ensure it seats at the bottom.
5. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install a new Hyundai 21513-23001 washer on the drain plug. Thread it in by hand until snug. Torque to 26 lb-ft (35 Nm).
6. Reinstall the Filter Cap
Thread the filter housing cap back in clockwise by hand until snug. Torque to 17.4 lb-ft (24 Nm). Do not overtighten — plastic housing threads strip easily.
7. Add Oil
Pour in 4 quarts of 5W-30 through the filler cap. Start the engine, let it idle 60 seconds, shut off. Wait 3–5 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan. Check the dipstick — add the remaining ~0.2 quarts to reach the "MAX" mark.
8. Start and Check for Leaks
Idle the engine for 90 seconds. Check for any seeping at the drain plug and filter area. The oil pressure warning light should extinguish within 3–5 seconds of startup.
9. Reset the Maintenance Reminder
In the 2023 Elantra, press the HOME button on the instrument cluster to navigate to the Vehicle section. Scroll to Maintenance → Reset → Oil. Confirm. The amber wrench indicator goes out.
Nu MPI Engine Notes
The naturally aspirated 2.0L in the 2023 Elantra is a reliable, simple engine that responds well to regular maintenance. Unlike the turbocharged 1.6T in the N-Line or N variants, the Nu MPI doesn't have a wastegate, turbo bearings, or intercooler to worry about. Just clean oil, on schedule.
