Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine (4 minutes)

2. Lift the Vehicle
The Frontier has excellent ground clearance — standard cab models may be accessible on ramps without lifting. Crew cab builds often need ramps or jack stands for comfortable drain plug access. Use the front frame rails as jack stand points.
3. Locate and Remove the Cartridge Filter
The PR38DD cartridge filter housing is located on the driver's side upper engine block. On the 2023 Frontier, it's accessible from above the engine on most builds.
Using the 27mm cap wrench, remove the housing cap counterclockwise. Oil will drain from the housing as you remove it — have a rag ready. Pull the old cartridge out of the housing with a rag or your fingers.
Inspect the housing interior. Note the O-ring groove at the top of the cap.
4. Install New Cartridge and O-Ring
Drop the new Nissan 15208-31U0A cartridge into the housing — it only seats one way. Lightly lubricate the new O-ring from the kit with fresh 5W-30. Seat the O-ring in the cap groove.
Reinstall the housing cap and torque to 25 lb-ft with the 27mm cap wrench. Do not over-tighten — the housing cap is plastic on some PR38DD builds.
5. Drain the Oil
Position the drain pan under the 14mm drain plug at the rear of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Let it drain 8–10 minutes.
Open the oil filler cap on top to speed drainage.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug with New Washer
Discard the old Nissan 11026-01M02 washer and install a new one. Thread the drain plug in by hand, then torque to 22–29 lb-ft. I target 25 lb-ft. The Frontier's oil pan is aluminum — don't exceed the spec.
7. Fill with 5W-30
Add 5.0 quarts first through the filler cap. Replace the cap, start the engine, idle 60 seconds. Shut off, wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick. Add remaining oil to reach the FULL mark — total is 5.4 quarts with filter.
8. Inspect for Leaks
At idle, inspect the drain plug and filter housing from below. Check the filter housing cap from above or below. No drips = you're done. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, final dipstick check.
9. Reset the Oil Life Monitor
On the 2023 Nissan Frontier:
- Turn ignition ON (engine off)
- Press the i button on the steering wheel to reach the vehicle information menu

Common Mistakes
