2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L Oil Change — Complete DIY Guide

I drove my last Camry to 220,000 miles. A lot of that durability comes down to regular oil changes and using the right oil spec. The 2024 Camry 2.5L (and 2.5L Hybrid) is one of the simplest, most reliable engines on the road — and the oil change is about as beginner-friendly as it gets.

Notes on the 2024 Camry

The 2.5L Dynamic Force engine is Toyota's newest 4-cylinder architecture, introduced in 2018 and refined for the 2024 model. It features a higher compression ratio and Atkinson-cycle combustion for efficiency — which means the engine runs best with the correct viscosity.

0W-20 only. Toyota specifies 0W-20 full synthetic for the 2024 Camry. The wider operating range of 0W-20 (from cold start to operating temperature) is optimized for the Dynamic Force engine's thermal management.

Non-hybrid vs. Hybrid capacity: The standard 2.5L holds 4.8 quarts. The Hybrid (2.5L THS) holds 4.6 quarts. Double-check your variant before filling.

Step-by-Step

1. Warm the Oil

Run the engine 3–4 minutes. Shut off, wait 5 minutes. Do not work under a hot engine.

2. Raise the Camry

The 2024 Camry has lower ground clearance than a truck — ramps or a low-profile floor jack + stands. Locate the correct lift points: under the vehicle side sills on the reinforced pinch welds.

3. Remove the Undertray Panels

The 2024 Camry has two plastic undertray panels beneath the engine. These are held by plastic push-pin clips:

• Forward panel: 4–6 push-pin clips
• Rear panel: 4 push-pin clips

Use a push-pin removal tool or a flathead screwdriver to pop the clips. Set the panels aside. The drain plug and oil filter are accessible once the trays are removed.

4. Drain the Oil

Locate the drain plug on the bottom rear of the oil pan — 14mm bolt. Position your drain pan, then remove the plug counterclockwise. Let it drain 6–8 minutes.

Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine (labeled OIL) while draining to speed flow.

5. Replace the Oil Filter

The filter is on the driver's side of the engine block, accessible from below. Remove counterclockwise. Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new gasket. Hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn.

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread in by hand. Torque to 27 lb-ft. Toyota recommends replacing the drain plug gasket (Toyota 90430-12031) each service — it's a $1–$2 washer that prevents slow seeps. Pick up a handful at the dealer parts counter.

7. Reinstall Undertray Panels

Snap the panels back up with the push-pin clips. A broken clip can let the panel sag, which causes road noise and aerodynamic drag.

8. Fill with New Oil

Pour in 4.5 quarts (non-hybrid) or 4.3 quarts (hybrid). Start the engine, idle 30 seconds, shut off, wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick. Top off to the FULL mark — typically another 0.3–0.5 quart.

9. Check for Leaks

Start the engine and idle for 2 minutes. Shut off and inspect the drain plug and filter base for any drips. The Dynamic Force engine has well-engineered sealing, so leaks here are rare — but check anyway.

10. Reset the Maintenance Reminder

The 2024 Camry uses the Toyota Maintenance Reminder system:

1. Turn ignition to ON (engine off)
2. Hold the Reset button on the instrument cluster
3. Turn ignition off while holding Reset
4. Turn ignition back to ON while still holding Reset
5. The maintenance light will blink and go out

Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting the undertray panels. The 2024 Camry has plastic undertrays that need to be removed for drain plug access. People who've changed oil on older Camrys (pre-2018) without undertrays get caught off guard.

2. Skipping the drain plug washer. Toyota uses a crush-type aluminum washer on the drain plug. Replace it every oil change. Reused washers cause slow weeps that leave oil spots on your driveway.
