What Does an Alternator Do?

Alternator Failure Symptoms

Battery Warning Light

The battery light (not the oil pressure light) illuminates when the electrical system voltage drops below about 13.5 volts. This is the most common first sign of alternator failure — the battery itself may be fine.

Dim or Flickering Headlights

If lights dim at idle and brighten when you rev the engine, the alternator isn't producing enough output at low RPM — a classic sign of worn brushes or a failing rectifier.

Electrical Gremlins

Power windows move slowly. The radio cuts out. The instrument cluster dims. Intermittent electrical oddities often point to a charging system problem.

Whining or Grinding from the Alternator

A worn alternator bearing produces a constant whine or grinding that increases with RPM. Distinct from belt squeal (higher pitched, speed-related), this is a deep mechanical sound.

Dead Battery — Repeatedly

If you replace the battery and it keeps dying in days rather than years, the alternator isn't keeping it charged.


Diagnosis: Confirm the Alternator Before Replacing It

A bad alternator is easy to confirm:

  1. Battery voltage test: With the engine off, measure battery voltage with a multimeter — should read 12.4–12.7V for a fully charged battery.
  2. Charging voltage test: Start the engine, rev to ~2,000 RPM, and measure the same two battery terminals. A healthy alternator outputs 13.8–14.7V. Below 13.5V = undercharging; above 15V = overcharging (regulator failure).
  3. Load test: Many auto parts stores will test your alternator free. Have it done before buying parts.

Tools Required

  • Socket set (metric and SAE)
  • Torque wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Belt tensioner tool or 15/19 mm breaker bar for tensioner
  • Memory saver (optional, but preserves radio presets and ECU adaptive data)
  • Multimeter
  • Ratchet straps or wire hook (to support removed components without disconnecting)

Step-by-Step: Alternator Replacement

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

Always disconnect the negative terminal first before touching alternator wiring. A live alternator output wire will arc-weld itself to anything it touches. Tape the terminal or tuck it away from the post.

If you want to preserve ECU learned values and radio presets, connect a memory saver (a small 9V-powered OBD2 keep-alive device) before disconnecting.

Step 2: Locate the Alternator and Belt Path

The alternator is driven by the serpentine belt (most modern vehicles) or a dedicated V-belt (older vehicles). Find the routing diagram under the hood or photograph it before removing anything.

Step 3: Remove the Serpentine Belt

Spring tensioner (most common): Insert a breaker bar or tensioner tool into the square drive on the tensioner pulley and rotate it against tension. Slip the belt off the alternator pulley.

Manually adjusted V-belt: Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the adjustment bar bolt, then swing the alternator toward the engine to release tension.

Step 4: Disconnect Alternator Wiring

Two connections on most alternators:

  1. The main output cable — a thick wire (10–12 AWG) bolted or push-connected to the B+ terminal. Remove the nut (8–10 mm) and pull the cable off.
  2. The regulator connector — a plastic plug with 2–4 wires. Press the tab and pull straight out.

Keep the large B+ cable from touching anything metallic. Even with the battery disconnected, residual charge in capacitors and the battery circuit can cause a spark.

Step 5: Remove Mounting Bolts

Most alternators are held by two bolts — a pivot bolt (large, passes through a lug on the alternator body) and an adjuster bolt or brace bolt. Remove them and slide the alternator out. Note orientation: the pulley groove must align with the belt path on installation.

Tight clearance is common. You may need to remove:

  • Engine air intake tube
  • Engine cover
  • Coolant overflow bottle
  • Battery tray

Plan this before you start; none of these additions take more than 5 minutes.

Step 6: Compare Old and New Alternator

Before installing, hold both units side by side:

  • Mounting lug positions match
  • Pulley size and groove count match (especially important if reusing a multi-groove serpentine belt)
  • Connector type matches
  • B+ terminal location matches

Remanufactured alternators occasionally have the wrong pulley installed. Verify before committing to installation.

Step 7: Install the New Alternator

Slide the alternator into position, thread all mounting bolts by hand, then torque in two passes to spec — typically 30–45 lb-ft for the main pivot bolt and 16–20 lb-ft for the brace bolt. Sequence matters: don't fully torque one bolt while the other is still loose or you'll bind the housing.

Step 8: Reconnect Wiring

  • Plug in the regulator connector until it clicks
  • Slide the B+ cable onto the terminal stud and torque the nut — typically 8–12 lb-ft (hand-tight plus a quarter turn). Under-torqued B+ terminals overheat and fail.

Step 9: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

Route per the diagram. With the tensioner held open, seat the belt on every pulley. Double-check each groove — a belt running on the edge of a pulley will shed within miles.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery and Test

  1. Reconnect the negative terminal.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Measure battery voltage at 2,000 RPM — target 13.8–14.7V.
  4. Turn on the headlights and A/C to add electrical load. Voltage should stay above 13.5V under load.
  5. A new alternator may need 15–20 minutes of driving to begin outputting full voltage as the regulator calibrates.

Core Return

Most parts stores charge a core deposit ($20–$75) on remanufactured alternators — you get it back when you return the old unit. Don't throw the old alternator in the trash.


Common Mistakes

  • Not disconnecting the battery first — the B+ terminal is always live; touching it causes serious arcing
  • Over-tightening the B+ terminal nut — strips the stud; hand-tight + ¼ turn is enough
  • Wrong belt routing — one pulley off and the belt will immediately damage a seal or drive component
  • Ignoring the root cause — a seized belt tensioner bearing or idler pulley often causes premature alternator failure; replace them when the belt is off
