Antifreeze is one of the most misunderstood fluids in a vehicle. Many owners assume it lasts forever, don't know how to test it, and have no idea that using the wrong type can cause real damage. This guide cuts through the confusion with everything you need to know about antifreeze for winter — including how to flush and refill the system yourself.

Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) mixes with water in your cooling system to do three things:
- Lower the freezing point — protecting the engine block and radiator from cracking in cold temperatures
- Raise the boiling point — protecting the cooling system in summer heat
- Prevent corrosion — inhibitor packages in antifreeze protect aluminum, cast iron, copper, and rubber components in the cooling system
A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water protects to approximately -34°F and provides boil-over protection to +265°F. A 70/30 mix (more antifreeze) protects to approximately -84°F for extreme climates.
Do not use straight antifreeze — undiluted antifreeze actually has a higher freeze point than a 50/50 mix and provides worse corrosion protection.
Coolant Types — Why This Matters
Using the wrong coolant type is a common mistake that can cause corrosion, sludge, and premature water pump failure. Coolants are NOT universally interchangeable.

Key rule: Check your owner's manual for the correct coolant type. Mixing OAT and IAT coolants creates a gel-like substance that clogs the cooling system.
How to Test Your Coolant
Test Method 1: Test Strips
Inexpensive coolant test strips ($5–$10 for a pack) check both freeze protection and inhibitor strength. Dip the strip in the coolant reservoir and compare colors.
What you're looking for:
- Freeze protection: At minimum, protection to the lowest expected temperature in your area, plus 10°F margin
- Inhibitor strength: Green or yellow on the appropriate test squares means inhibitors are still active; red indicates depleted protection
Test Method 2: Coolant Hydrometer
A ball-type float hydrometer ($5–$15) measures the specific gravity of the coolant to determine freeze protection. More accurate than strips for determining the actual freeze point.
If your coolant shows freeze protection down to only 0°F or warmer, it's time to address the mixture — either drain and add concentrated antifreeze, or do a full flush.
Signs You Need a Coolant Flush (Not Just a Top-Off)
- Coolant is brown, rusty, or has floating particles — degraded inhibitors and corrosion products
- Visible rust streaks around the coolant reservoir cap
- Coolant smells sour or strange — chemical breakdown
- Age: Most coolant (except Toyota SLLC pink and BMW blue) should be flushed every 2–5 years regardless of appearance
DIY Coolant Flush: Step-by-Step
What You'll Need
- New antifreeze (correct type for your vehicle — see your owner's manual)
- Distilled water (NOT tap water — minerals in tap water cause scale deposits)
- Drain pan (at least 2-gallon capacity)
- Funnel
- Cooling system flush chemical (optional, $10)
- Coolant test strips or hydrometer
Step 1: Wait for the Engine to Cool
Never open a coolant reservoir or radiator cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurized — coolant will eject violently and can cause severe burns. Wait at least 2 hours after last driving.
Step 2: Drain the Old Coolant
- Locate the drain petcock at the bottom of the radiator (most vehicles have one; some require removing the lower radiator hose)
- Place a drain pan beneath
- Open the petcock or remove the lower hose and let the coolant drain completely
- Note: A simple drain-and-fill only replaces about 50–60% of the coolant; the heater core, engine block passages, and upper hoses retain fluid. This is fine for routine maintenance. A complete flush requires a flush machine.
Step 3: Flush with Water (Optional but Recommended)
Refill the system with clean distilled water, run the engine to operating temperature with the heat on full, then drain again. This removes old inhibitor residues.
Step 4: Refill
- Mix antifreeze and distilled water at the correct ratio (50/50 for most climates)
- Pre-mix in a clean container before filling
- Fill slowly through the radiator or reservoir — leave 1–2 inches from the top
- Replace the cap
Step 5: Bleed the System
Many vehicles trap air in the cooling system after a flush, which causes overheating or erratic temperature gauge behavior.
- Start the engine with the heat on max
- Keep the coolant reservoir cap loose (or removed with the engine running COLD at start)
- Let the engine warm up to operating temp — you'll see coolant level drop as air purges
- Top off as needed and replace cap
Step 6: Check for Leaks
After the first drive, inspect all hose connections, the radiator, and the drain petcock for any drips.
