Brake Caliper Sticking — Symptoms and DIY Fix
Your car pulls to one side when braking. One wheel gets hot while the others stay cool. You're burning through pads on one axle end twice as fast as the other. These are the classic signs of a sticking brake caliper — a problem that starts as a minor annoyance and ends as a safety issue and a rotor replacement if you ignore it long enough.
The good news: diagnosing a sticky caliper takes about ten minutes, and in many cases you can clean and service it yourself for under $30.

The brake caliper houses the pistons that press the brake pads against the rotor. When you release the brake pedal, the pistons are supposed to retract slightly, releasing the pad. Several things can prevent this:
1. Seized piston The caliper piston moves in a bore sealed by rubber seals. Corrosion, old rubber, or contaminated brake fluid can cause the piston to stick in the extended position, keeping the pad dragging against the rotor constantly.
2. Seized slide pins On floating (sliding) calipers — the most common type — the caliper body rides on two slide pins. If these pins corrode or run dry, the caliper doesn't retract evenly after braking. One pad drags; the other doesn't. Slide pin seizure is more common than piston seizure and much easier to fix.
3. Collapsed brake hose Less obvious: the rubber brake hose can deteriorate internally, creating a one-way valve effect. Pressure pushes the pads on, but can't release. Squeezing the hose may reveal softness or deformation.
Symptoms to Look For
- Pulling to one side during or after braking
- One wheel much hotter than the others after driving (careful touching — do this only when the car has been parked, then driven a short distance)
- Burning smell from a specific wheel
- Uneven pad wear — one pad on a caliper worn significantly more than the other, or one wheel's pads wearing faster than the other side
- Car dragging or lacking acceleration as if the brakes are partially applied
- Grabbing feel when applying brakes, especially at low speed
Step 1: Confirm Which Caliper Is Sticking
Safely jack up the car on a level surface with the engine off and transmission in park (or in gear for manual). Try to rotate each wheel by hand. A wheel that won't spin freely with the brakes not applied is dragging — that's your suspect wheel.
Alternatively, drive a short distance (1–2 miles), park immediately, and carefully place your hand near (not on) each wheel. A sticking caliper produces noticeably more heat than the others. Don't burn yourself — just hold your hand a few inches from the wheel.
Step 2: Inspect the Slide Pins
Remove the wheel on the affected corner (safely on jack stands). Locate the two slide pin bolts on the caliper — they thread into the caliper bracket and allow the caliper to float. Remove the caliper from the rotor (leave the brake hose connected and hang the caliper with a wire hook — do not let it hang by the hose).
Pull out the slide pins. They should slide smoothly in and out. Seized pins will be corroded, dry, or stuck entirely. Clean them with brake cleaner, inspect for pitting, and lubricate with dedicated caliper slide pin grease (not regular grease — it's incompatible with rubber). Reinstall and confirm smooth movement.
Step 3: Inspect and Clean the Piston
With the caliper off the vehicle, push the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp or caliper piston tool (for rear calipers with integrated parking brakes, you need a special twist-back tool — they screw in rather than press straight in). Open the reservoir cap first to relieve pressure.
As the piston retracts, inspect the rubber dust boot around the piston for tears or cracking. A damaged boot lets moisture in and corrodes the bore. If the piston won't retract smoothly even with tool pressure, the caliper should be rebuilt or replaced.
Wipe the piston with brake cleaner and inspect the boot. If the piston moves freely once cleaned and the boot is intact, a caliper rebuild kit (new seals and boots, ~$10–15) can restore it. If there's corrosion inside the bore, replace the caliper.
Step 4: Rebuild or Replace
Service the caliper: Rebuild kits work well when the bore is clean and the piston moves freely. Disassemble, install new seals, reassemble, and you're done.
Replace the caliper: If the bore is corroded, the piston is seized, or the hose is collapsed, replacing the caliper is the right call. New calipers for common vehicles run $40–$120. Always replace both sides (left and right) of an axle at once to maintain even braking.
After the Repair
Reinstall the caliper, bleed the brakes if you opened any fluid connections (see How to Bleed Brakes by Yourself), and bed in the new or cleaned brakes with a few gentle stops from 30 mph before driving normally.
