Blown fuse or failed relay. Two of the simplest — and most frequently overlooked — fixes in all of automotive repair. A fuse costs $0.50 to $2.00. A relay costs $10–$25. And yet mechanics charge $100–$200 to diagnose and fix these because most car owners don't know where to look or how to test them.
This guide gives you everything you need to find, test, and replace fuses and relays yourself — and understand why a fuse blew in the first place.

A fuse is a sacrificial component that protects electrical wiring. When too much current flows through a circuit (from a short, overload, or component failure), the metal strip inside the fuse melts and breaks the circuit — preventing wire damage, fire, or worse.
Types of automotive fuses:

Finding Your Fuse Boxes
Most vehicles have two fuse boxes:
1. Underhood fuse box (also called the Power Distribution Center): Located near the battery, this box handles high-current circuits — alternator, starter, cooling fan, fuel pump, ABS module, and other high-draw systems. It usually also contains large relays.
2. Under-dash fuse box (also called the Interior Fuse Panel): Located under the dashboard, usually on the driver's side. This handles lower-current interior circuits — radio, windows, lights, accessories.
Your owner's manual shows the exact location of each box and the function of every fuse. If you've lost your manual, the diagrams are often printed on the inside of the fuse box cover, or available at the manufacturer's website or a free resource like carfusebox.com.
How to Identify a Blown Fuse
Visual inspection: Pull the fuse and look through the clear plastic housing at the metal strip. If the strip is broken or has a visible gap, the fuse is blown. Note: some fuses fail without an obvious visual sign — always test with a multimeter or test light to be sure.
Test light method:
- With the circuit powered on (ignition on for most circuits), probe each side of the fuse while it's still in the socket
- A test light should light up on both sides of a good fuse
- If it lights on only one side, the fuse is blown
Multimeter continuity method:
- Remove the fuse
- Set multimeter to continuity or ohms
- Touch probes to both fuse terminals
- A good fuse beeps (continuity) or reads near zero ohms
What to Do After a Blown Fuse
Never just replace a blown fuse and move on without understanding why it blew. A fuse doesn't blow randomly — something caused it.
Common causes of blown fuses:
- Short circuit: A wire has abraded through its insulation and is contacting bare metal, creating a low-resistance path
- Component failure: A failing motor (window regulator, blower motor) drawing excess current
- Overloaded circuit: Too many accessories wired into a single circuit
- Water intrusion: Moisture in a connector causing a short
If you replace a fuse and it blows again immediately or soon after: trace the circuit. Disconnect individual components on that fuse circuit one at a time until the fuse stops blowing — that's your failed component.
Understanding Relays
A relay is an electromagnetic switch. A small control signal (typically 12V from a switch or ECU) energizes a coil inside the relay, which then closes a high-current switch to power a large load like the fuel pump, starter solenoid, cooling fan, or AC compressor.
Why relays fail:
- The coil burns out (relay doesn't activate)
- The internal contacts corrode or weld shut (relay stuck open or closed)
- Vibration fatigue over time
How to Test a Relay
The swap test: Find an identical relay in the same fuse/relay box. Most boxes have multiple identical relays — same part number, same terminal count. Swap your suspect relay with a known-good one. If the problem moves with the relay, the relay is bad.
Multimeter test: A standard automotive relay has 4–5 terminals:
- Terminal 85 & 86: Coil input (trigger circuit, typically 12V and ground)
- Terminal 30: Input power
- Terminal 87: Switched output (normally open)
- Terminal 87a: Switched output (normally closed, on 5-pin relays)
- Apply 12V to terminal 86 and ground to terminal 85 (or vice versa — check the relay diagram stamped on the housing)
- Use multimeter in continuity mode between terminals 30 and 87
- With no power to the coil: should show no continuity (open circuit)
- With power applied to the coil: should show continuity (closed circuit, relay switched on)
If the coil doesn't activate or the contacts don't switch, replace the relay.
Fuse Replacement Guide
Always replace with the exact same amperage rating. Never use a higher-amperage fuse to "fix" a repeatedly blown fuse — this defeats the protection and can cause wiring damage or fire.
Amperage is color-coded on blade fuses:
- Gray: 2A
- Violet: 3A
- Pink/Tan: 4A/5A
- Brown: 7.5A
- Red: 10A
- Blue: 15A
- Yellow: 20A
- Clear/White: 25A
- Green: 30A
- Pink: 35A
