A horn that doesn't work isn't just an annoyance — it's a safety hazard and a failed inspection item in many states. Most horn failures are cheap and quick to fix: a blown fuse, a dead relay, a bad horn unit, or a faulty clock spring. Here's how to diagnose it and fix it yourself without guessing.

How Car Horns Work

The horn circuit is simple: steering wheel button → clock spring (a coiled wire that lets the wheel turn without breaking the connection) → relay → fuse → horn. Failure can occur at any of these points.

Step 1: Check the Fuse First

Open your fuse box (consult your owner's manual — there may be one under the dash and one in the engine bay). Find the horn fuse (labeled "HORN" in your fuse diagram). Pull it with a fuse puller and inspect it — if the wire inside is broken, replace it with the same amperage fuse. Test.

This solves maybe 20% of horn problems. If the new fuse blows immediately, there's a short circuit — diagnose before replacing again.

Step 2: Check the Horn Relay

The horn relay is usually in the underhood fuse box. It's a small square unit — find it on the fuse box diagram. Most relays are interchangeable with other same-spec relays in the box.

Swap test: Swap the horn relay with another identical relay from your fuse box (check that the amp ratings match). Try the horn. If it works, the relay was faulty — buy a replacement ($8–$15 at the parts store).

Step 3: Test the Horn Directly

If the fuse and relay are fine, test whether the horn itself works. Locate the horn (usually behind the front bumper, grille area, or near the headlights — you may need to look under the hood or through the grille).

With the fuse and relay in place, have someone press the horn while you probe the horn's two terminals with a test light or voltmeter. You should see 12V when the horn button is pressed.

If you see 12V but no sound: The horn is dead. Replace it.

If you see no voltage: The problem is upstream — in the steering wheel button, clock spring, or wiring.

Step 4: Test the Horn by Jumping It

Disconnect the horn connector. Use a jumper wire to connect one terminal directly to battery positive and ground the other terminal to a body bolt. If the horn sounds, it works — your issue is upstream.

If it still doesn't sound, replace the horn. Horns are $15–$40 and bolt on with one nut. Swap the connector and you're done.

Step 5: Check the Clock Spring (If Voltage Isn't Reaching the Horn)

The clock spring is a coiled ribbon of wires inside the steering column hub. It allows the steering wheel to rotate while maintaining electrical connections to the horn, airbag, and controls. When it breaks, horn and steering wheel controls stop working.

Symptoms of a bad clock spring:

  • Horn doesn't work
  • Steering wheel controls (cruise, audio) stop working intermittently
  • Airbag warning light may appear

Clock spring replacement is more involved — you'll need to remove the steering wheel (requires an airbag warning: disconnect the battery negative and wait 10 minutes before working on the steering column). It's a DIY-able job but requires caution.

Step 6: Check the Steering Wheel Horn Button

On some older vehicles, the horn button contacts corrode. You can test this by spraying electrical contact cleaner into the contact area behind the steering wheel pad (with the pad carefully pried back on applicable vehicles). This is rare on modern cars with integrated airbag/horn pads.
