Paint scratches fall into a surprisingly wide range of severity — from a surface scuff that polishes out in 10 minutes to a deep gouge that requires multiple repair stages. Matching the repair method to the actual depth of the scratch is the difference between a result that looks perfect and one that draws more attention than the original scratch.

Before doing anything to a scratch, perform the fingernail test: run your fingernail lightly across the scratch.
- Fingernail doesn't catch — the scratch is in the clear coat only. Polish and compound will likely remove it completely.
- Fingernail catches slightly — the scratch penetrates through some of the clear coat. Wet sanding plus polish can help.
- Fingernail catches significantly or you can see color — the scratch reaches the base coat or primer. Touch-up paint or spray repair is needed.
- Scratch is white and bright — you're looking at bare metal. Full repair required to prevent rust.
This test determines everything that follows.
Method 1: Machine Polish (Clear Coat Scratches Only)
For light swirl marks, micro-scratches, and very shallow single scratches that don't catch your fingernail, polishing compound removes the scratches by leveling the top of the clear coat.
Products:
- Cutting compound (Meguiar's M105, Griot's Fast Correcting Cream)
- Finishing polish (Meguiar's M205, CarPro Essence Plus)
- Dual-action polisher ($60–$150) or by hand for small areas
Process:
- Wash and dry the area.
- Apply a small amount of cutting compound to a foam pad.
- Work the compound in overlapping passes at medium machine speed (or firm, circular hand pressure).
- Wipe off residue and inspect.
- Follow with finishing polish to restore gloss.
A dual-action polisher produces dramatically better results than hand-polishing for larger areas. The investment pays off on every future polish or light scratch job.
Method 2: Wet Sanding + Compound (Deep Clear Coat Scratches)
If the scratch is clearly in the clear coat (your fingernail catches slightly) but hasn't broken through to color, wet sanding can level the surrounding clear to bring the scratch into alignment.
Process:
- Tape off the area around the scratch (leave 3–4 inches of working room).
- Wet-sand with 2500-grit wet/dry paper using water lubrication. Sand parallel to the scratch.
- Check progress frequently — you're sanding a flat area around the scratch until the scratch disappears into the leveled surface.
- Follow with 3000-grit to refine.
- Polish with compound and finishing polish to restore gloss.
Warning: wet sanding removes clear coat. Don't over-sand or you'll break through to the base coat and turn a clear coat scratch into a color repair.
Method 3: Touch-Up Paint (Base Coat Breaks)

- Find your paint code (door jamb sticker).
- Order color-matched touch-up paint online by paint code.
- Clean, dry, and prime if needed (if bare metal is visible).
- Apply base coat in thin layers until flush with surrounding surface.
- Apply clear coat.
- After 5–7 days, wet sand and polish the repair to blend.
For narrow, linear scratches (a key scratch or parking lot contact), a touch-up paint pen with a fine tip gives better control than a brush. Overfill slightly, let cure, sand flush.
Method 4: Aerosol Panel Respray (Extensive or Multiple Scratches)
When scratches cover a significant portion of a panel — or there are too many spots to touch up individually — a full aerosol panel respray becomes the better approach.
This method is appropriate for:
- Multiple scratches across a single panel
- Scratches and chips that overlap or cluster
- Cases where blending would leave obvious touch-up spots
Process:
- Wet sand the entire panel with 800-grit to scuff the existing clear coat (adhesion surface).
- Wipe down with wax and grease remover.
- Fill scratches with glazing putty (spot putty) if needed.
- Prime any bare metal areas with self-etching primer.
- Apply base coat (aerosol, color-matched) across the entire panel in 3–4 thin coats.
- Apply clear coat across the full panel in 3–4 thin coats.
- After curing 48 hours, wet sand with 2000–3000 grit and polish to blend.
A full panel respray produces a uniform result — no visible transition points between touched-up and original paint. The limiting factor is color matching: if adjacent panels have faded and the color has shifted, a freshly painted panel may appear slightly different. This is a known challenge in any automotive paint work.
Specialty Cases
White or Silver Paint
Light-colored paints show compounding marks less than dark paints. Easier to achieve good polish results on white and silver.
Black and Dark Colors
Show everything — every swirl mark, compound residue, and unblended edge. Use the finest compound you can and follow up with dedicated black paint polish (e.g., Meguiar's Black Wax). Machine polishing is highly recommended for dark cars.
Metallic and Pearl Paint
Metallic flake orientation matters for blending — spray patterns affect how the metallic flake lies in the paint. A poorly blended metallic touch-up shows clearly in direct sun. For metallics, blending into a natural panel break (door seam, character line) produces better results.
What a Body Shop Adds
Body shops have spray guns, spray booths, professional mixing systems, and paint code readers that can account for fade and shift. For single-panel repairs, they typically charge $400–$800. For small scratches, a DIY approach with correct technique achieves comparable results at $30–$80 in materials.
The value proposition is clear: minor and moderate scratch repair is solidly in DIY territory. Major damage — structural, large multi-panel sections, or high-visibility areas of luxury vehicles — warrants professional work.
