Car Won't Start: How to Diagnose It Yourself (Dead Battery vs. Starter vs. Alternator)
Car won't start. You turn the key, something happens — or doesn't — and now you're running through a mental list of everything it could be. Is it the battery? The starter? Something worse?
Before you call a tow truck or panic, run through this diagnostic tree. Most no-start conditions are diagnosable in under 15 minutes with basic tools and systematic thinking.

Step 1: What Happens When You Turn the Key?
The symptom when you try to start tells you where to look. Be precise about what you hear and see.
Symptom A: Nothing Happens — Complete Silence
No click, no crank, no instrument cluster lights when you turn the key.
Most likely cause: Dead battery or complete loss of power
- Check the battery terminals — are they corroded, loose, or disconnected? Clean and tighten if needed.
- Check the main fuses in the under-hood fuse box. A blown main fuse kills all electrical.
- Test battery voltage with a multimeter (see Step 2).
If the battery tests dead and you have no lights at all, you almost certainly have a dead battery, not a starter or alternator problem.
Symptom B: Single Click, Then Nothing
You hear one click from the engine bay and then silence.
Most likely cause: Dead or very weak battery
That single click is the starter solenoid engaging — but the battery doesn't have enough power to spin the starter motor. This is almost always a battery issue, not a starter.
- Test battery voltage (Step 2)
- Attempt a jump start (Step 3)
Symptom C: Rapid Clicking (Click-Click-Click-Click)
Fast clicking from the engine bay, multiple times per second when you turn the key.
Most likely cause: Weak battery, corroded terminals, or high resistance in the starter circuit
The starter is trying to engage repeatedly but dropping voltage too fast to complete each crank attempt. Classic symptom of a battery that's on its last legs.
- Check terminal connections — even a slightly loose or corroded terminal causes this
- Test battery voltage
- Attempt a jump start
Symptom D: Normal Cranking, Won't Fire
The starter is spinning the engine normally (you can hear it turning over), but the engine won't start and run.
The starter and battery are fine. You have a fuel, spark, or compression issue.
This takes a different diagnostic path — see Step 5.
Symptom E: Grinding Sound When Cranking
A metal-on-metal grinding noise when you turn the key.
Most likely cause: Bad starter drive gear or damaged flywheel ring gear
The starter's Bendix gear isn't meshing properly with the flywheel. This is a starter issue, not a battery issue. Jumping the car won't help. The starter needs to be replaced.
Step 2: Test Battery Voltage
With the multimeter set to DC voltage (20V range), place the red probe on the positive battery terminal and the black probe on the negative.
What the numbers mean:
- 12.6–12.8V — Battery is fully charged. Good.
- 12.0–12.5V — Battery is partially discharged. May start the car; try a charge first.
- 11.5–12.0V — Battery is significantly discharged. Unlikely to start.
- Below 11.5V — Battery is deeply discharged or dead. Needs charging or replacement.
- Below 10V (with engine not running) — Cell failure. Battery needs replacement.
Voltage alone doesn't tell the whole story. A battery can show 12.6V at rest and fail completely under load. If you have a battery older than 3–4 years and it's showing symptoms, get it load-tested at any auto parts store (free service).
Step 3: Attempt a Jump Start
If the battery voltage is low or you're seeing Symptoms B or C, try a jump start.
Proper jump start sequence:
- Position the good vehicle nose-to-nose with the dead vehicle (or use a jump pack)
- Red cable → dead battery positive → good battery positive
- Black cable → good battery negative → unpainted metal ground on the dead car (away from battery)
- Start the good car and let it run for 2–3 minutes
- Attempt to start the dead car
Interpreting the result:
It starts: Your battery was discharged. Now diagnose WHY it was dead. If it starts fine after jumping and holds a charge with a 30-minute drive, your battery may just have been accidentally discharged (lights left on, etc.). If the battery keeps dying, you have either a bad battery or an alternator that isn't charging it.
Still won't start after a good jump: The battery is so dead the jump isn't providing enough current, OR you have a starter problem. Try a higher-output jump source and try again. If it still won't crank, the starter is likely the problem.
Step 4: Test the Alternator (If Battery Keeps Dying)
If your car starts after a jump but dies again within a day, your alternator may not be charging the battery.
Test with a multimeter:
- Start the engine
- Test voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running
- Good alternator: 13.5–14.8V
- Undercharging (possible alternator issue): 12.5–13.5V
- No charge: Below 12.5V — alternator is likely not charging
Also turn on your headlights and AC with the engine running. If voltage drops significantly (below 13V), the alternator may be unable to keep up with electrical load — a sign of a failing alternator.
Step 5: Engine Cranks But Won't Fire
If the engine cranks fine but won't start, you're dealing with a different problem. The engine needs three things to start: spark, fuel, and compression.
Check for spark:
- Pull a spark plug and hold the wire against engine ground while cranking. You should see a blue spark. No spark = ignition issue (coil, crank sensor, etc.)
Check for fuel:
- Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to "on" (before cranking)? A faint buzz from the rear of the vehicle is the pump priming. No sound = possible dead fuel pump.
- Check fuel pressure if you have a gauge. Most vehicles: 35–65 PSI at idle.
Check for codes:
- If the engine cranks but won't fire, connect an OBD2 reader and check for stored codes. A P0335 (crank position sensor) or P0340 (cam sensor) can prevent the engine from starting even with good spark plugs and fuel.
