Control arm bushings are small rubber (or polyurethane) inserts pressed into the ends of your control arms. They cushion the pivot points where the control arm meets the vehicle frame. When they wear out — and they always do — you get steering wander, clunking, and accelerated tire wear.

Control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame or subframe. Each control arm pivots at one or two points via pressed-in bushings. These bushings:
- Allow controlled pivot movement while damping vibration
- Maintain precise suspension geometry during cornering and braking
- Isolate road noise from the cabin
When the rubber cracks, tears, or collapses, the control arm can move in ways it's not supposed to. The result is sloppy steering, clunking over bumps, and uneven tire wear.
Signs of Worn Control Arm Bushings
Clunking or Knocking
A low, mechanical clunk when going over bumps, especially at low speeds. Worse in cold weather when rubber stiffens and cracks open further. Similar to sway bar link noise but often deeper and more pronounced.
Differentiate from other noise: Control arm bushing clunks are usually felt in the steering wheel or floorboard. Sway bar link noise is higher-pitched. Ball joint noise is often a click or pop.
Steering Vagueness
The car wanders on the highway. You're constantly making small corrections. The steering doesn't feel direct — there's a disconnected quality to it.
Pulling Under Braking
Hard braking shifts the car to one side. When a bushing is completely gone, the control arm can shift under load, pulling the wheel out of alignment momentarily.
Visible Rubber Damage
Jack the car up, get under it, and look at the bushing visible at each control arm pivot point. Look for:
- Cracked or torn rubber
- Rubber that has separated from the metal sleeve
- Missing rubber (fully collapsed bushing)
- The metal sleeve shifting in the bore
Any of these means the bushing needs replacement.
Play in the Control Arm
With the vehicle on jack stands, grab the front of the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and try to move it in and out (not the same as the bearing test at 12 and 6). Movement that isn't in the bearing indicates a worn bushing.
Two Types of Control Arm Bushing Replacement
Option 1: Replace Bushings Only (Press-In)
The bushings are pressed into the control arm housing. Replacing them requires pressing the old bushing out and pressing a new one in. Tools required:
- Hydraulic press (shop press), OR
- Bushing press/installation kit (hydraulic or screw-type — available for $50–$100)
- Correct-size driver sleeves for your bushing diameter
This is the cost-effective route ($20–$60 in parts per arm) but requires a press or rental of one.
Option 2: Replace the Entire Control Arm
Many vehicles now have control arm assemblies available with bushings and ball joints pre-installed. The price difference between a bare arm ($30–$60) and a complete arm ($60–$150) is often worth it because:
- No press required
- New ball joints and bushings in one job
- Labor time is shorter
If your ball joints are also worn (inspect them while you're in there), replacing the whole arm makes sense.
Tools Required
For bushing-only replacement:
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Socket set (metric and SAE)
- Torque wrench
- Penetrating oil
- Hydraulic press or bushing press kit
- Correct-size driver sleeves
- Anti-seize compound
For complete control arm replacement:
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Socket set and breaker bar
- Torque wrench
- Pickle fork or ball joint separator (if the arm has a ball joint that presses into the knuckle)
- Penetrating oil
Step-by-Step: Control Arm Bushing Replacement
Step 1: Raise and Support the Vehicle
Jack up the vehicle and place on jack stands under the frame or subframe — not the control arms. You need the suspension to hang free.
Spray all bolts with penetrating oil. On older vehicles, control arm bolts seize into the frame. Give the oil 15–20 minutes to work.
Step 2: Remove the Control Arm
Ball joint end: The control arm ball joint typically presses into or bolts to the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint separator or press to disconnect the joint.
Bushing end(s): Each bushing pivot is held by a bolt through the frame bracket. Remove the bolt, then the control arm.
Control arm bolts are often large — 18mm to 22mm range. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench.
Step 3: Press Out the Old Bushing
Secure the control arm in the press. Use the correct-size driver to push the bushing out through the bore. Apply steady, even pressure — don't hammer.
Step 4: Clean the Bore
Clean the bushing bore thoroughly. Remove any rust, debris, or remaining rubber. A clean, smooth bore ensures the new bushing seats correctly.
Step 5: Press In the New Bushing
Apply a thin coat of soapy water or clean rubber lubricant to the bushing outer sleeve. DO NOT use petroleum-based lubricant — it degrades rubber.
Align the bushing correctly — the rubber wings or shoulders must face the right direction. Some bushings are directional; check the installation instructions.
Press the bushing straight in until fully seated. It should be flush with or just below the surface of the housing.
Step 6: Reinstall the Control Arm
Route the arm back into position and thread all bolts hand-tight. Don't torque them yet.
Critical: Suspension fasteners must be torqued with the suspension at ride height — not with the suspension hanging. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels before doing final tightening.
Step 7: Torque to Spec at Ride Height
Lower the vehicle so the suspension is loaded by the vehicle's weight. Now torque the control arm bolts to specification.
Typical torque specs:
- Front control arm bolts: 80–130 ft-lbs (varies widely by vehicle)
- Ball joint pinch bolts: 30–50 ft-lbs
Look up your specific vehicle. These specs matter — control arm bolts work loose if undertorqued and distort bushings if overtorqued.
Step 8: Get a Wheel Alignment
Any time you remove a control arm, you've changed the vehicle's alignment. Get a four-wheel alignment before any highway driving. Budget $80–$150 at an independent shop. Don't skip this step.
DIY vs. Shop: When to Walk Away
DIY is straightforward if:
- You have a press or can rent one
- The mounting bolts are not fully seized
- You're replacing the whole arm (press not required)
Go to a shop if:
- Bolts are seized into the frame with no movement after penetrating oil and heat
- The subframe shows rust damage at the mounting points
- You don't have access to a press and don't want to rent one
