A chip or crack in your windshield has a way of spreading. What starts as a small star crack from a highway rock can grow into a 12-inch line across your field of view over a few weeks — especially with temperature changes, vibration, and another cold morning. Act fast and you might be able to fix it yourself for under $15. Wait too long, ignore the wrong type of damage, or attempt to fix something that's not fixable, and you're looking at a $250–500 replacement.

Not all chips and cracks can be repaired with resin — and some that technically can be filled shouldn't be because the results won't be structurally or optically adequate.
Generally repairable:
- Single chips smaller than a quarter (roughly 1 inch diameter)
- Cracks shorter than 6 inches that don't reach the edge of the glass
- Star breaks, bullseye cracks, half-moon cracks
- Damage that doesn't penetrate both layers of the laminate
Typically requires replacement:
- Cracks longer than 6–12 inches (varies by repair kit instructions and state law)
- Any crack that reaches the edge of the windshield (edge cracks are structurally compromised and spread rapidly)
- Cracks in the driver's direct line of sight (even filled resin affects optical clarity slightly)
- Damage to the inner glass layer (you'll see delamination — the glass looks white or foggy)
- Multiple chips close together
State inspection note: Many states will fail your safety inspection for cracks longer than a certain length or cracks in the driver's sightline. Check your state's rules before deciding to live with a repaired crack.
How Windshield Repair Resin Works
Windshield glass is laminated — two layers of glass with a plastic PVB layer bonded between them. When a rock hits it, the outer layer cracks or chips but the inner layer often holds. Repair resin fills the void in the outer layer, bonds to the glass, and restores structural integrity and optical clarity (mostly — a good repair is hard to see, but rarely invisible under certain lighting).
DIY kits inject resin into the crack under slight vacuum/pressure using a small plastic bridge tool. The resin cures under UV light — natural sunlight works, or a UV lamp speeds the process.
DIY Windshield Repair: Step-by-Step
What you need:
- Windshield repair kit (Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit ~$10, Permatex, or 3M kits are all solid)
- A clean, warm day (between 50–90°F — resin cures poorly in cold or doesn't spread properly in heat)
- Clean microfiber cloths
- Rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner
Process:

Clean the damage. Remove any glass chips, dirt, or moisture from the impact point. Use the included pick or a pin to clear any loose glass from the void. Dry thoroughly — moisture trapped under the resin causes clouding.

Position the bridge tool. Most kits use a small plastic bridge that centers over the chip and holds an injector cylinder directly over the damage.

Create vacuum. Thread the injector down until it contacts the glass, then pull up on the plunger to create a vacuum. Hold for 60 seconds — this pulls air out of the crack.

Inject resin. Push the plunger down to inject resin under slight pressure. Hold for 60–90 seconds. The resin should flow into the crack.

Cure. Remove the injector, place the curing strip (a small adhesive film) over the resin, and expose to direct sunlight or UV lamp for 5–10 minutes.

Remove excess resin. Peel the curing strip and use the included razor blade to remove any excess resin that's above the glass surface. Wipe clean.

Evaluate. In most direct lighting, a good repair is significantly less visible than the original damage. You may still see the repair at certain angles — that's normal. What you've stopped is spreading.
Common Mistakes
- Using the kit in cold weather or shade. Resin needs UV and warmth to cure properly. A cloudy, cold day gives you a soft, hazy result.
- Not cleaning the chip first. Dirt or moisture under the resin causes permanent cloudiness.
- Overfilling. More resin is not better — a thin, even fill that's fully cured beats a thick, bubbled result.
- Trying to repair a crack that's too long. Resin won't hold a structural crack together; it'll just look patched and continue to spread.
The Insurance Angle
If you have comprehensive auto insurance, windshield repair or replacement is often covered under the comprehensive deductible — and many insurers waive the deductible entirely for repairs (since a $15 repair prevents a $400 claim). Check with your insurer before paying out of pocket. Many states legally require insurers to offer free repair coverage.
