Differential fluid is one of the most consistently forgotten maintenance items on the average DIYer's checklist. Most vehicles don't have a dashboard reminder for it, service writers don't bring it up until very late intervals, and the consequences of neglecting it are slow and invisible — right up until they're not, when a whining differential or failed ring-and-pinion gear reminds you what gear oil actually does.
This is a simple job. If you've ever done an oil change, you can do a diff fluid change.

The differential is the gearset that allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds when cornering. It's submerged in gear oil that lubricates the ring gear, pinion, and bearings. Over time that fluid:
- Absorbs heat and breaks down
- Accumulates metal particles from normal wear
- Loses its extreme-pressure additive package (what protects gears under load)
Old fluid doesn't just stop lubricating — the metal contamination actively accelerates wear. A $20 fluid change at the right interval is a lot cheaper than a $600–1,500 differential rebuild.
When to Change Differential Fluid
General intervals (always check your owner's manual):
- Rear differential: 30,000–60,000 miles under normal conditions; 15,000–30,000 miles if you tow or frequently drive in severe conditions
- Front differential (if applicable): Same intervals as rear
- Limited-slip differential: Check fluid more frequently — LSD fluid degrades faster due to the clutch pack interaction
- After water crossing: Any deep water crossing should prompt an immediate fluid check. Water intrusion turns the fluid milky — change it before driving further.
If you've never changed your diff fluid and you're past 50,000 miles, it's time regardless of what the service schedule says.
What Fluid to Use
This is critical. The wrong fluid can damage the differential.
- Standard open diff: 75W-90 or 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil (verify with your owner's manual or door placard)
- Limited-slip differential: Requires LSD-compatible fluid or a GL-5 fluid plus LSD friction modifier additive — do not use standard GL-5 in an LSD without confirming compatibility
- Some rear differentials (Toyota, Dodge): May require specific OEM fluid — check your service guide before buying generic
Tools You'll Need
- Floor jack and jack stands (or ramps)
- Drain pan (2–3 quart capacity)
- 3/8" square drive or hex key for differential fill and drain plugs (size varies by vehicle)
- Fluid pump or injection bottle (fill port is usually too small to pour from a bottle directly)
- Clean rags
- New drain plug gasket/washer if applicable
- Correct gear oil (quantity per your service guide — typically 1.5–2 quarts per differential)
Step-by-Step Differential Fluid Change
1. Locate the Differential
On RWD and 4WD vehicles, the rear differential is the round or oval housing in the center of the rear axle. On FWD vehicles, the front differential is integrated into the transaxle — this guide applies mainly to separate differential housings.
2. Identify the Fill and Drain Plugs
Most differentials have two plugs: a fill plug (higher on the housing) and a drain plug (lower). Some older vehicles have only a fill plug with a cover plate instead of a drain plug — draining requires removing the cover.
Remove the fill plug first. This is critical: if the fill plug is stripped or seized, you won't be able to refill after draining. Confirm it's loose before draining.
3. Drain the Old Fluid
Place your drain pan under the housing. Remove the drain plug. Allow the fluid to drain completely — it will be dark, thick, and smell like sulfur. This is normal.
Inspect the drain plug magnet (if present) for metallic debris. Small gray metallic paste is normal wear. Large metal shavings or chunks are not — investigate before refilling.
4. Install the Drain Plug
Reinstall with a new crush washer/gasket if applicable. Torque to spec — typically 25–40 ft-lbs.
5. Fill with New Fluid
Insert the pump or injection bottle into the fill port. Add fluid slowly until it starts to seep out of the fill hole — this indicates the diff is full to the correct level. The fill-to-overflow method is the correct fill procedure for differentials.
Install the fill plug and torque to spec.
6. Check for Leaks
Start the vehicle, take a short drive, then inspect under the vehicle for any seepage at the plugs.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong fluid type in an LSD — causes chatter, shudder, and premature clutch pack wear
- Draining before verifying the fill plug is accessible — you'll be stuck with a drained diff and no way to refill
- Overfilling — more fluid creates excess pressure and can push fluid past seals
- Skipping the magnet inspection — significant metal accumulation is an early warning of differential wear
