How to Store Your Car for Winter: The Complete DIY Guide

Putting a car away for winter isn't just parking it in the garage and walking away. Six months of inactivity does things to a car that one weekend of driving won't fix: fuel goes stale, batteries drain, rodents nest, and tires develop flat spots.

Whether you're storing a collector car, a summer-only sports car, or just a second vehicle you won't need for 30-plus days, this guide covers everything — done correctly, in sequence.

When Does Storage Prep Matter?

If you're parking the car for less than two weeks, don't bother with most of this. Drive it again in two weeks and everything will be fine.

If the car is going away for 30 days or more, start taking it seriously. If it's 90+ days (classic winter storage), do every step in this guide.

The two thresholds that trigger real problems:

  • 30+ days: Battery drain, fuel varnishing begin
  • 90+ days: Flat-spotting tires, rodent nesting, fuel degradation, brake corrosion

Step 1: Change the Oil Before Storage

This is counterintuitive — why change oil before storage when the car won't be driven?

Because used engine oil is acidic. The combustion byproducts in old oil attack internal engine components during storage. Fresh oil is neutral. Changing before storage protects cylinder walls, bearings, and rings while the car sits.

Change the oil and filter with the correct spec for your vehicle. Run the engine for 5 minutes after the change to circulate the fresh oil throughout.

If the oil change is already recently done (last 1,000 miles), skip it and just verify the level.


Step 2: Add Fuel Stabilizer

Gasoline begins to degrade within 30 days. The light volatile compounds evaporate, leaving heavier fractions that oxidize into varnish and gum. This varnish clogs fuel injectors, gums up the carburetor (on older vehicles), and can clog fuel filters.

Use a proper fuel stabilizer: STA-BIL, Star Tron, and PRI-G are all reliable. Follow the dosage on the label — typically 1 oz per 2.5 gallons.

Correct procedure:

  1. Add the stabilizer to the tank
  2. Fill the tank full (a full tank minimizes the air space where condensation forms)
  3. Drive the car 10–15 minutes to circulate stabilized fuel through the entire fuel system — injectors, fuel rail, and all

A half-empty tank with no stabilizer in a car stored for 6 months is a $200–$400 fuel system cleaning job. Stabilizer costs $10.


Step 3: Check and Top Off Fluids

Before long storage, top off:

  • Coolant: Verify freeze protection is adequate for your winter temperatures. Use a hydrometer or test strip. Most 50/50 premixed coolant protects to -34°F — adequate for most climates.
  • Brake fluid: Check level in the reservoir. Low brake fluid may indicate a leak — find it before storage.
  • Power steering fluid: Check and top off.
  • Windshield washer fluid: Fill with concentrated fluid — diluted fluid can freeze in the reservoir.

Step 4: Battery — Tender or Disconnect

A battery left sitting will self-discharge. In cold temperatures, a discharged battery freezes and is destroyed. A battery tender is the correct solution.

Option A: Battery Tender (Best)

A smart trickle charger (Battery Tender brand, NOCO GENIUS, or similar) maintains the battery at full charge without overcharging. Plug it in, leave it connected all winter.

Connect the leads to the battery terminals (or use a quick-disconnect harness if you store frequently). The tender monitors the battery and maintains it at full charge. When you return to the car in spring, you'll have a healthy battery ready to go.

Cost: $25–$50 for a quality unit. Pays for itself the first battery it saves.

Option B: Disconnect the Battery

If you can't run a tender (no power in the storage location), disconnect the negative terminal. This stops the parasitic drain from the car's electronics.

Downside: On modern vehicles, disconnecting the battery clears radio presets, resets the ECU fuel trims, and may affect other stored settings. The ECU will relearn after a few drive cycles, but radio presets need to be reprogrammed manually.

Option C: Remove the Battery and Store Inside

The best option if you can't run a tender. A fully charged battery stored at room temperature holds its charge far better than one stored in a cold garage. Use a smart charger to top it off before reinstalling in spring.


Step 5: Tire Considerations

Tires left stationary develop flat spots — areas where the contact patch deforms from the weight of the car sitting in one position. On warm-weather tires and performance rubber, this can happen in as little as 30 days.

Options by storage duration:

30–60 days: Inflate tires to the maximum sidewall pressure (not the door placard spec — the maximum). This reduces deformation. Park on carpet or rubber tire pads if available.

60–90 days: Consider moving the car forward and backward a foot every 2–3 weeks to rotate the contact patch.

90+ days (serious collector car storage): Jack the car up on jack stands and remove the wheels. Store wheels vertically. This eliminates flat spotting entirely and removes load from suspension components.

If flat spotting occurs, it often resolves after driving a few miles once the tires warm up. If the flat spots are persistent or the tire is hard-pressed, the tires may need replacement.


Step 6: Clean the Car — Inside and Out

Wash and wax the car before storage. Dirt and moisture trapped against paint over 6 months causes surface corrosion and oxidation. A good wax coat provides a protective barrier.

Interior: Vacuum thoroughly and remove any food or organic material. Even a forgotten granola bar under the seat is an invitation for rodents.

Apply a rubber and plastic protectant to door seals and trim. Rubber left untreated can dry out and crack over a winter.


Step 7: Rodent Prevention

Rodents are one of the biggest threats to stored vehicles. Mice nest in air filter housings, wiring harnesses, and under seats. They chew through wiring insulation, vacuum hoses, and insulation material.

Prevention measures:

  • Stuff steel wool or copper mesh into the tailpipe (don't forget to remove it before starting)
  • Plug the air intake with a rag or foam — remove before starting
  • Place mouse traps or repellent sachets (peppermint oil bags, Cedar Fresh blocks) around and under the car
  • Don't store birdseed, pet food, or other attractants in the garage
  • Elevate the car on jack stands if rodents are a serious problem — it makes access harder

Rewiring a rodent-damaged harness can cost $500–$3,000. Prevention costs $10.


Step 8: Cover Selection

For garage storage: A soft indoor car cover protects against dust and prevents UV damage from garage lights. Avoid non-breathable covers — trapped moisture promotes rust. Look for covers with a soft inner lining that won't scratch paint.

For outdoor storage: Use a cover rated for outdoor use with UV protection and breathable material. Secure it with tie-down straps or a lock — a loose cover in the wind damages paint.

Never store a wet car under a cover. Wash and dry the car first. A cover over a wet car traps moisture and creates conditions for mold, mildew, and paint damage.


Step 9: The Return-to-Service Checklist

When you're ready to bring the car out of storage:

  1. Remove the tailpipe plug, air intake plug, and any rodent deterrents
  2. Check all fluid levels
  3. Check tire pressure — cold tires may have lost pressure over winter
  4. Inspect for rodent damage — look in the engine bay and under the hood
  5. Check brakes — the rotors may have surface rust; it will clear on the first few stops
  6. Reconnect or reinstall the battery
  7. Start the engine and let it idle to operating temperature before driving
  8. Drive gently for the first few miles while everything warms up
