Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Pull trouble codes first. Connect your OBD-II scanner and check for codes. P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold, Bank 1) and P0430 (Bank 2) are the direct cat codes. P0141, P0131, and other O2 sensor codes may be causing a false P0420 — fix O2 sensors before replacing the converter.

  2. Do the rattle test. Cold engine, key out. Get under the car and rap the catalytic converter with a rubber mallet — lightly. A good cat is silent. A failing cat has a broken-off ceramic substrate inside; you'll hear it rattle like a tin can full of gravel. This test alone can confirm failure without any tools.

  3. Check for heat distribution. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature. Using an infrared thermometer or carefully feeling near the converter housing, the inlet should be noticeably hotter than the outlet on a working cat. If inlet and outlet are the same temperature, the cat isn't doing anything — it's either dead or bypassed.

  4. Inspect for physical damage. Look at the converter body. Road debris damage, dents, rust-through holes, or a visibly cracked housing are all reasons to replace. A cat with a fist-sized dent can have a broken substrate internally even if it passes the rattle test.

  5. Check exhaust restriction with a vacuum gauge. At idle, normal vacuum should be 17–22 in/Hg. At 2,500 RPM hold, vacuum should rise — if it drops, you have restriction. A clogged cat creates backpressure that shows up as dropping vacuum under load. This is one of the best diagnostic tools for a partially clogged cat.

  6. Check live O2 sensor data. Using your scanner's live data, watch the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) O2 sensors. The upstream sensor should switch rapidly between rich and lean. The downstream sensor should be relatively stable — it's monitoring what the cat cleaned up. If both sensors are switching at the same rate, the cat isn't working.

  7. Evaluate cleaning vs. replacement. Catalytic converter cleaner (a bottle added to the gas tank) can help with mild carbon buildup and may temporarily clear a P0420. It will not fix a physically broken substrate, a melted catalyst, or a converter damaged by oil or coolant burning. If the rattle test is positive or the converter ran at 1,600°F+ from a rich-running engine, replace it.

  8. Confirm with a road test. After any cleaning treatment, clear codes and drive two full warm-up cycles. If P0420 returns within 100 miles, the converter is done.

  • Check for oil or coolant burning first — if your engine is burning oil or coolant, those contaminants will destroy a new catalytic converter within months. Fix the root cause before spending money on a new cat.
  • Aftermarket cats must be CARB-compliant in California and some other states — verify before buying. Using a non-compliant cat can fail a smog test.
  • The O2 sensor behind the cat is cheap — if P0420 shows up immediately after replacing the cat, the downstream O2 sensor may be the actual fault. It's a $20–$50 part worth swapping first on high-mileage vehicles.

  • Replacing the cat before checking O2 sensors — a bad downstream O2 sensor produces a P0420 code. Replace the sensor first, clear the code, and see if it returns.
  • Buying the cheapest direct-fit converter — low-quality aftermarket cats fail within 6–12 months. Pay for a quality converter with an actual warranty.
  • Ignoring what killed the first cat — a converter that melts or clogs prematurely was usually killed by a misfiring cylinder, rich running condition, or coolant leak. Fix the engine problem or you'll kill the new one too.
