DIY Exhaust Upgrades: What's Worth Doing Yourself
The exhaust system is one of the most tangible ways to change the character of a car — the sound, the feel, and to some extent the performance. But it's also a category full of myths, wildly varying quality, and upgrades that make noise without actually doing anything useful. Before you spend $200–2,000 on exhaust modifications, it helps to understand what each component actually does and what a realistic DIY install looks like.

Your exhaust system does several jobs at once:
- Removes burned gases from the combustion chamber efficiently
- Reduces emissions via the catalytic converter
- Reduces noise via the muffler and resonators
- Back-pressure management — contrary to old hot-rodder wisdom, modern fuel-injected engines are mapped to operate with a certain exhaust flow characteristic; radical pressure changes require ECM tuning to realize gains
The components in order from engine to tailpipe:
- Exhaust manifold (or headers on performance setups)
- Oxygen sensors (before and after cat)
- Catalytic converter
- Resonator (not present on all vehicles)
- Muffler
- Tailpipe
What Performance Exhaust Mods Actually Do
Cat-Back Exhaust
A cat-back system replaces everything from the catalytic converter back: mid-pipe, resonator (if equipped), muffler, and tailpipe.
What you actually get:
- More exhaust note — typically deeper, more prominent under acceleration. Can range from tasteful to obnoxiously loud depending on the system.
- 5–20 horsepower on a naturally aspirated engine. Often closer to 5–10 on street-tuned cars without additional ECM tuning.
- On turbocharged applications, a less restrictive exhaust path lets the turbo spool more efficiently — gains can be more meaningful.
DIY difficulty: Moderate. Bolt-on at the catalytic converter outlet and at mounting hangers. Main challenge is rusted hardware (especially on older cars in rust-belt states). A penetrating oil soak 24–48 hours before the job is not optional.
Axle-Back Exhaust
Replaces only from the axle/rear muffler location back. Mostly changes sound, minimal power change.
Best if you: Want a different exhaust note without significant money or complexity.
DIY difficulty: Easiest exhaust mod — typically 2–4 bolts and hanger clips.
Headers
Replaces the exhaust manifold with a tuned-length header design to improve exhaust scavenging. Legitimate power gains (15–30+ hp on N/A engines), but:
- Significantly more complex install — you're removing the manifold, which means working around O2 sensors, heat shields, and often the starter and other accessories
- May require an exhaust tune to realize full gains
- Long-tube headers may require removing the catalytic converter, making them non-emissions-legal in CARB states
DIY difficulty: Advanced. Not recommended as a first exhaust mod.
Muffler Delete / Resonator Delete
Simply removes the muffler or resonator without replacement. Immediately makes the car extremely loud. Often results in drone at highway speeds (a constant resonant sound that becomes genuinely fatiguing on long drives).
Who this is for: Track cars, not street cars. Not recommended for daily drivers unless you enjoy noise complaints.
DIY Installation: Cat-Back System
This is the most common performance exhaust DIY.
What you need:
- Cat-back system specific to your make/model/year — verify it's the correct fit before ordering
- New exhaust gaskets and hardware (often included; verify)
- Penetrating oil (apply 24–48 hours before disassembly)
- Ratchet, long extensions, oxygen sensor socket (O2 sensors may need to be transferred)
- Floor jack, jack stands, or a lift
- A second set of hands is helpful
Process:
- Lift and safely support the vehicle — you'll be working under it for an extended time
- Apply penetrating oil to all connection bolts the day before. On older vehicles, this is not optional.
- Remove the old system starting from the tailpipe and working forward — rear hanger clips, muffler mounting bolts, mid-pipe flange bolts
- Transfer oxygen sensors if not pre-installed in the new system (O2 sensor socket: $10–15 and well worth it)
- Install the new system in reverse — start from the front connection (cat-back flange), work rearward
- Hang all hanger mounts before tightening any flange bolts — get everything aligned first
- Torque all connection hardware and verify exhaust gaskets seat correctly
- Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks at connections while the system is cold and again once hot
Typical install time: 1–3 hours for a relatively clean vehicle. 3–5 hours if hardware is seized.
Legal Considerations
Many states (especially California and other CARB states) have specific laws about aftermarket exhaust sound levels and emissions equipment. Removing the catalytic converter is illegal on public roads in all 50 states. Check your state's regulations before modifying.
