Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse (check the fuse box diagram inside your owner's manual) and crank the engine until it stalls. This bleeds pressure from the lines. No fuse? Locate the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and depress it while covering with a rag.

  2. Disconnect the battery. Fuel and electricity don't mix. Pull the negative terminal before you touch any fuel lines or connectors.

  3. Access the fuel pump. Most modern vehicles have an in-tank fuel pump accessed from either the trunk floor (remove the carpet and access panel) or from underneath the car. A handful of older vehicles mount the pump externally on the frame rail — those are much easier. For in-tank access, remove the rear seat cushion or trunk floor panel.

  4. Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the quick-connect tabs on the fuel lines. Have a rag ready — residual fuel will drip. Unplug the wiring harness connector.

  5. Remove the lock ring. The pump is held in the tank by a large plastic or metal lock ring. Use the lock ring tool to turn it counterclockwise. If you don't have the tool, a brass punch and hammer works — tap counterclockwise carefully. Brass won't spark; steel will. Use brass only.

  6. Lift out the pump assembly slowly. The fuel level sending unit is attached — don't yank it. Tilt the assembly to get it through the opening. Note the orientation of the float arm before pulling it out.

  7. Transfer components if needed. Some replacement pumps come as bare pumps without the sending unit or strainer. Swap the strainer (fuel sock) and sending unit to the new assembly if your replacement doesn't include them.

  8. Install the new pump. Lower it into the tank in the same orientation as the old one. The arrow or notch on the pump flange aligns with a mark on the tank — get this right or the float arm will bind on the tank wall.

  9. Install the lock ring. Tighten clockwise. Hand-tight plus one solid quarter-turn with the tool. Don't overtighten — you can crack the plastic tank ring.

  10. Reconnect everything and test before buttoning up. Reconnect lines, connector, and battery. Turn the key to ON (not start) three times, waiting a few seconds each time. This primes the pump. Then start the car and check for leaks at the access panel before replacing the trim.

Pro Tips

  • Drain the tank if it's more than half full — less fuel spillage, lighter tank, easier handling. Use a hand pump through the filler neck.
  • Replace the fuel filter at the same time — it's cheap and you're already in the system. A clogged filter kills new pumps prematurely.
  • Photograph the wiring and line routing before disassembly — you'll thank yourself during reassembly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Working near ignition sources — open flames, running engines nearby, or static electricity are real hazards. Work in a ventilated space.
  • Skipping the new O-ring — the old O-ring compresses and won't seal the new pump properly. Always use a fresh one.
  • Misaligning the pump on installation — if the float reads empty when the tank is full, the pump is rotated wrong. Pull it out and reinstall with the correct orientation mark.
