Step-by-Step Instructions

Confirm the heater core is actually the problem. Check these first: Is the coolant level full? A low coolant level means the heater core never fills — top it off and see if heat returns. Is the thermostat working? A stuck-open thermostat prevents the engine from reaching operating temperature. Is the heater valve (on vehicles with a manual heater valve) open? These checks take 5 minutes and are free.

Let the engine cool completely. You'll be disconnecting heater hoses and working with coolant. A cold system is safer.

Locate the heater core hoses. Two hoses run from the engine compartment through the firewall to the heater core behind the dashboard. They're usually 5/8" or 3/4" rubber hoses, and both pass through the firewall. They may have clamps or spring clips holding them onto the firewall fittings.

Place a drain pan under the firewall fittings and disconnect both hoses. Slide back the clamps and pull the hoses off the firewall fittings. Some coolant will drain out — expected. Note which hose is the inlet (from the water pump) and which is the outlet (return).

Connect a garden hose to the outlet fitting. Use a hose-to-heater-core-hose adapter or just slide the garden hose into the disconnected heater core hose and clamp it securely. Hold the inlet hose pointed down into a drain pan.

Flush with moderate water pressure. Run water through the heater core from the outlet fitting backward (reverse flush). This pushes sediment out the direction it came from. Flush until the water runs clear — no brown or rust-colored water, no chunks.

Flush forward as well. Reverse the hose connections and flush in the normal flow direction for another few minutes. Clear water from both directions means the core is clean.

Flush with a dedicated heater core flush chemical. Cooling system flush products (follow the label instructions) break up stubborn deposits. Pour the product into one hose, let it soak 15–30 minutes, then flush it out completely with clean water.

Reconnect the heater hoses and refill with fresh coolant. Use 50/50 pre-mix or the correct coolant type for your vehicle. Fill the reservoir and radiator.

Bleed the cooling system. Run the engine with the heat on full, squeeze the upper radiator hose periodically to burp air pockets, and add coolant as the level drops. Air pockets prevent the heater core from filling and cause a no-heat condition even after a successful flush.
Pro Tips
- Old, depleted coolant causes heater core buildup — if you've gone more than 3 years without a coolant change, drain and refill the entire system when you do this flush. The flush treats the symptom; the coolant change prevents recurrence.
- A sweet antifreeze smell in the cabin means the core is actually leaking — at that point, flushing won't help. The heater core needs replacement or bypass.
- A heater core bypass buys time — if you can't afford the replacement job now, connecting the inlet and outlet hoses together with a short piece of hose bypasses the heater core entirely. You lose cabin heat but stop the coolant leak into the cabin.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not checking the simple stuff first — a stuck thermostat or low coolant causes no heat and doesn't require any heater core work. Rule those out first.
- Skipping the burp after refill — trapped air in the heater core creates a no-heat condition even after a perfect flush. Burp the system thoroughly.
- Using hard tap water for the flush without flushing with distilled afterward — tap water minerals leave deposits. Use distilled water for the final rinse before refilling with coolant.
