Find the PCV valve. On most four-cylinder engines, it's on the valve cover — look for a rubber hose running from the valve cover to the intake manifold or air intake tube. Follow the hose and you'll find the valve where it connects. On V6 and V8 engines, it may be on either valve cover, or integrated into the oil separator. Some Honda and Toyota engines integrate it into the oil cap area.

Identify the connection type. Most PCV valves either push-in with a rubber grommet or thread into the valve cover. Some are held with a simple hose barb and the hose pulls off by hand.

Remove the hose. Squeeze the hose clamp (if it has one) with pliers and slide it back. Twist and pull the hose off the valve. Expect a small amount of oily residue — this is normal.

Remove the old PCV valve. If push-in: grip the valve and pull straight out, twisting slightly. If threaded: use the appropriate socket and unscrew counterclockwise. If it's stuck from old rubber, work it back and forth gently.

Shake the old valve. A good PCV valve rattles — the internal check ball moves. No rattle means the valve is stuck. A valve that rattles loosely all the time (no resistance) may be stuck open. Either way, replace it.

Install the new valve. Push-in types snap in by hand. Threaded types — apply a small amount of thread sealant if required, and tighten snugly (don't over-torque). Some threaded valves have a crush washer; replace it if so.

Reconnect the hose. Slide the hose back over the valve barb fully and reposition the clamp so it's over the hose end on the barb.

Start the engine and check for vacuum. Hold a finger over the PCV valve inlet briefly (with the hose disconnected) — you should feel suction. This confirms the valve is drawing properly. Reconnect the hose.

- Replace the PCV hose at the same time — the hose hardens and cracks over time. A new valve with a cracked hose is still a vacuum leak. They're $5–$15.
- Clean the valve cover breather port — carbon buildup in the port restricts flow. A pick tool and some brake cleaner clean it out in 2 minutes.
- Use the OEM part number when possible — aftermarket PCV valves vary in quality. The OEM valve is usually $10–$20 and lasts much longer than cheap generics.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying the wrong valve — PCV valves are vehicle-specific. The flow rate and check ball size are calibrated for your engine's vacuum. A wrong valve causes idle problems even if it physically fits.
- Forgetting to reconnect the hose — sounds obvious, but a disconnected PCV hose is a massive vacuum leak. Double-check before starting the engine.
