DIY Power Steering Fluid Flush: How to Do It Right
Power steering fluid breaks down over time. It oxidizes, picks up metal particles, and becomes dark and foamy — a sign it's contaminating your pump and rack. A flush every 30,000–50,000 miles keeps the system clean and prevents the $400–$800 pump replacement that dirty fluid causes. Here's how to flush it yourself.

Get the DIY Mechanic System- Fresh power steering fluid (check your owner's manual for the correct type — ATF, Dexron, or a dedicated PS fluid)
- Turkey baster or fluid transfer pump (large syringe)
- Drain pan
- Clean rags
- Funnel
- Optional: power steering flush fluid (available at parts stores)
This is not a high-difficulty job. You don't need to touch any hoses or get under the car for a basic flush.
Why Flush Power Steering Fluid?
Most manufacturers don't list power steering fluid in the maintenance schedule — so most people never do it. But dark, contaminated fluid is abrasive and causes:
- Pump wear and premature failure
- Rack-and-pinion seal damage
- Stiff, jerky steering feel
- Moaning or whining noises
A flush costs you $10–$20 in fluid. A pump replacement costs $400–$800.
Step 1: Check Current Fluid Condition
Locate the power steering reservoir (usually near the front of the engine, passenger side — labeled with a steering wheel icon). Remove the cap and check the fluid:
- Clear to light amber = healthy
- Dark brown = needs flush
- Black = overdue, flush ASAP
- Foamy or milky = water contamination, flush and find the source
Step 2: Remove Old Fluid from the Reservoir
Use your turkey baster or fluid syringe to suck as much old fluid as possible out of the reservoir. Get it as empty as you can. Wipe the inside of the reservoir with a clean rag if possible.
Step 3: Refill with Fresh Fluid
Add fresh fluid to the max fill line. Don't overfill.
Step 4: Run the Engine and Turn the Wheel
Start the engine. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock (full left, full right) several times — 5–6 cycles. This circulates the new fluid through the rack, mixes it with residual old fluid, and pushes contaminated fluid back into the reservoir.
Turn the engine off.
Step 5: Repeat the Exchange
Suck out the fluid again — it'll already be darker from mixing. Refill with fresh fluid. Run the engine and cycle the wheel again.
Repeat this exchange process 3–4 times until the fluid you're removing looks similar in color and clarity to what you're putting in.
Step 6: Do a Final Fill and Purge
On the last fill, replace the cap and run the engine to full operating temperature. Turn the wheel lock to lock again. Check the fluid level and top off as needed. The fluid level may drop slightly as it fully circulates.
Step 7: Check for Leaks and Verify Feel
With the engine running, check around the reservoir cap and any hose connections for seeping. Take the car for a short drive — steering should feel normal. If it feels stiff, foamy, or you hear moaning, check the fluid level again and look for air in the system (more wheel cycles may be needed to purge air).
Is Your Power Steering Electric?
If your car has Electric Power Steering (EPS) — no fluid reservoir under the hood — there's nothing to flush. EPS became standard on many vehicles around 2010–2015. If you can't find a reservoir, check your owner's manual.
When Flushing Isn't Enough
If flushing doesn't cure a whining pump or stiff steering:
- Check the serpentine belt for proper tension (drives the PS pump)
- Inspect hoses for collapsing or kinking
- Check for low fluid level indicating a leak
- The pump may be failing — testing it requires a pressure gauge set
