The HEMI: Power Meets Maintenance Sensitivity

The 5.7L and 6.4L HEMIs are fundamentally sound engines. They make great power, respond well to modifications, and can go 200,000+ miles with proper care. The enemy is:

  1. Active Fuel Management (AFM): The 5.7L HEMI uses cylinder deactivation. The lifters that control this are oil-pressure dependent — and fail at much higher rates than normal lifters when oil is old, low, or wrong spec. This is the Challenger owner's single biggest maintenance risk.

  2. Overheating under hard use: The Challenger's cooling system is designed for street use. Track days and aggressive canyon driving can push coolant temps higher than designed — watch your gauge.
