Method 1: Cold Start + Listen

- The engine is cold (metal is contracted, gaps are larger)
- The vehicle is at idle (you can hear without road noise)
Systematically move from the exhaust manifold at the engine, back through the downpipe, flex pipe, catalytic converter, center pipe, muffler, and tailpipe. The leak will be a ticking, puffing, or hissing sound.
Method 2: Visual Inspection (Engine Off, Cold)
Look for:
- Black soot deposits around flanges, gaskets, or welds
- Rust streaks around joints or seams
- Cracks in the manifold (cast iron — look for hairline cracks near bolt bosses)
- Holes in flex pipe (the corrugated metal section behind the manifold on many vehicles)
Method 3: Rag Test (Idle, Be Careful)
With the engine idling, have a helper block the tailpipe with a shop rag (just for 2–3 seconds). This briefly pressurizes the system — leaks become audible hisses or visible puffs of smoke. Never do this with your face near hot exhaust components.

1. Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Symptoms: Ticking noise from the engine bay that's loudest when cold; possible smell of exhaust near the engine.

- Remove the exhaust manifold (usually 8–10 bolts)

- Inspect manifold for warping with a straightedge — a warped manifold needs machining or replacement
