The Ford Explorer is one of America's most popular family SUVs — and one of the most overlooked vehicles when it comes to DIY maintenance. Explorer owners tend to take it to the dealer because "it's complicated," then get hit with $400–$600 service bills for work they could do themselves in a couple of hours.

The Explorer is not complicated. The 2.3L EcoBoost (2020+) and the 3.0L twin-turbo V6 (ST) are well-documented engines with straightforward maintenance. There are a few Explorer-specific items — particularly the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) fluid — that dealers will never mention unless they fail.

2.3L EcoBoost Common Issue: Oil Dilution

The 2.3L EcoBoost in the Explorer (and the F-150 with same engine) has a documented tendency toward oil dilution — fuel entering the crankcase via direct injection on cold start cycles. Do not extend oil change intervals beyond 7,500 miles if you do frequent short trips. Check your oil level and color regularly.


PTU (Power Transfer Unit) Fluid — The Most Neglected Explorer Service

This is the service that Explorer owners don't know about until the PTU fails. The Power Transfer Unit transfers torque from the front-wheel-drive transaxle to the rear wheels on AWD models. It has its own fluid — and Ford does not list it in the standard maintenance schedule.

Access note: The 2.3L EcoBoost spark plugs are under the plastic engine cover, accessed from the top. Fairly easy job. Use a stubby extension on cylinders 1 and 4 if there's interference.
