GMC Sierra 1500 DIY Maintenance Guide

The GMC Sierra 1500 shares its platform with the Chevy Silverado but carries a slightly more premium badge — and the same legendary GM EcoTec3 V8 family under the hood. The 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 engines are reliable, high-output units that will run 200,000+ miles on scheduled maintenance. The Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) cylinder deactivation system, however, has a documented weakness that every Sierra owner should understand.

Oil Change (5.3L EcoTec3 V8)

The 5.3L EcoTec3 requires 0W-20 dexos1 Gen 2 full synthetic — this spec is not optional. The AFM/DFM lifters operate on oil pressure, and using the wrong viscosity or non-dexos spec oil accelerates lifter wear.

AFM/DFM Lifter Issue — What Every Sierra Owner Must Know

The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system on the 5.3L (and Dynamic Fuel Management on newer 6.2L models) deactivates cylinders to improve fuel economy. The AFM lifters use oil-pressure-actuated collapsing mechanisms. On high-mileage 5.3L engines (often 80,000–150,000 miles), these lifters fail catastrophically.

Symptoms: Tick or clatter from the valley of the engine, misfire codes P0300-P0308, sudden loss of power. Cause: Worn AFM lifters collapse and stay collapsed. Often requires engine removal and full lifter replacement. Prevention:

  1. Use only dexos1 Gen 2 0W-20 — never cheap conventional oil
  2. Consider an AFM/DFM delete kit if you're past 80,000 miles (disables cylinder deactivation entirely, uses solid lifters, adds a Range Technology AFM disabler)
  3. Keep oil changes at 5,000-mile intervals if you do any towing

Transmission Fluid (10L80 / 10L90 10-Speed)

Late-model Sierra 1500 trucks (2019+) use the 10L80 or 10L90 10-speed transmission. Earlier models use the 6L80 6-speed.

10L80/10L90 Fluid spec: GM DEXRON-HP (DO NOT substitute with ATF+4 or older DEXRON specs) Capacity: 11.5 quarts total; 4.5–5.0 quarts for a drain-and-fill service Pan bolt torque: 8 ft-lbs Service interval: 45,000 miles under normal use (GM "lifetime" claim is optimistic — service at 45k)

Front and Rear Differential Fluid

Front axle (AAM 9.25 IFS):

Rear axle (AAM 9.5" or 11.5"):

  • Fluid: 75W-90 full synthetic, add friction modifier if G80 locking differential equipped
  • Capacity: 3.5–4.5 pints depending on axle
  • Drain plug torque: 35 ft-lbs
  • Service interval: 45,000 miles normal, 15,000 miles towing/off-road

GM trucks use DEXCOOL orange OAT coolant — never mix with green silicate coolant.

Capacity: ~15–16 quarts (5.3L V8) Service interval: 5 years / 150,000 miles Drain location: Lower radiator hose or petcock valve (passenger side of radiator) Thermostat: 195°F OEM spec (195°F is correct — do not install a 160°F "performance" thermostat)

Spark Plugs (5.3L V8)

OEM plugs: ACDelco 41-188 iridium (do NOT use AC Delco 41-162 double platinum — wrong heat range) Gap: 0.040" Torque: 11 ft-lbs (aluminum heads — use anti-seize) Interval: 100,000 miles with iridium plugs, 30,000 with copper

Common issue: Plugs on the passenger side of the 5.3L can be difficult to access due to brake booster and master cylinder routing. A swivel socket and extension makes this manageable.
