The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your HVAC system — the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation. It catches dust, pollen, allergens, exhaust particles, and debris before they blow into the passenger compartment.
A clogged cabin filter causes:
- Reduced airflow from the vents (even at max fan)
- Musty or stale smell from the AC
- Increased allergen exposure inside the vehicle
- The AC compressor working harder than it needs to
Recommended replacement interval: every 15,000–25,000 miles, or once a year. If you drive in dusty conditions or live with heavy pollen, replace it annually.
Tools and Parts
- New cabin air filter (match to your year/make/model — check the box or look up on the filter brand website)
- Flashlight (sometimes helpful)
- Possibly a small flathead screwdriver
The filter itself costs $12–$25 at AutoZone, O'Reilly, or online.
Step 1: Locate the Filter Housing
On most modern vehicles, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. On some, it's under the dash on the passenger side, or under the hood near the base of the windshield.
Check your owner's manual — it will tell you where the filter is and usually has a diagram. Most vehicles built after 2005 have the filter behind the glove box.
Step 2: Access the Filter (Behind Glove Box)
This is the most variable step depending on your vehicle.
Common method (most Japanese and American vehicles):
- Open the glove box fully.
- Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward and lower it past its normal stop — this releases the retention tabs.
- The box drops down and you can see the filter housing behind it.
Some vehicles have screws or clips instead of squeeze tabs. Use your flashlight to look at the edges of the glove box — any fasteners will be visible.
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
The filter housing typically has a cover secured by clips or tabs. Press the clips inward and pull the cover off. The old filter slides straight out.
Note the orientation of the old filter before removing it — there's usually a directional airflow arrow on the side. Take a photo if you need a reference.
Step 4: Install the New Filter
Slide the new filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one. The airflow arrow should point toward the cabin (typically downward or toward the vehicle interior). Push it flush — it should seat flat without gaps.
Replace the housing cover, snap the clips back in, and swing the glove box back into position.
Step 5: Test the Airflow
Start the car and run the HVAC on max fan. You should notice improved airflow compared to a clogged filter. If the system has a musty smell, it may take a few minutes of running for the odor to clear — that's normal.
One More Thing: The Engine Air Filter
While you're in maintenance mode, consider checking the engine air filter too. It's a separate filter that cleans air going into the engine — located in a large plastic housing in the engine bay. Replacement is just as easy and also costs $15–$25 at any parts store.
