How to Change Power Steering Fluid (and When You Actually Need To)
Power steering fluid is one of the most neglected fluids on most vehicles — partly because there's no dashboard warning light for it, and partly because the service interval varies widely. Here's when it actually needs changing and how to do it yourself in about 30 minutes.

First things first: many vehicles built after 2010 use electric power steering (EPS), which has no hydraulic fluid. EPS systems use an electric motor to assist steering — no pump, no reservoir, no fluid to change.
To check: open the hood and look for a power steering reservoir — a small plastic container (usually labeled "POWER STEERING" or with a steering wheel icon) with a cap. If you don't see one, you have electric steering and this service doesn't apply to your vehicle.
When Does Power Steering Fluid Need Changing?
Most manufacturers don't specify a hard interval, which leads many people to assume it never needs changing. That's wrong.
Change intervals by condition:
- Standard use: Every 50,000–100,000 miles, or every 5 years
- If the fluid is dark brown or black: Change it now
- If you hear whining from the pump: Check the level first, then consider a fluid change
- After any hydraulic component replacement: Flush and refill with fresh fluid
Check the fluid condition:
Open the reservoir cap (cold engine) and look at the fluid. It should be amber to clear or light pink. If it's dark brown, nearly black, or smells burnt, it's time.
What Fluid Does Your Car Use?
This varies by manufacturer — using the wrong fluid can damage seals. Common types:
- Generic power steering fluid (most American vehicles): labeled "power steering fluid" at any parts store
- Dexron/Mercon ATF (many GM, some Ford vehicles): automatic transmission fluid doubles as power steering fluid in these systems
- Honda/Acura PSF: Honda vehicles require Honda-specific fluid
- Pentosin CHF 11S (many European vehicles: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen): do not use generic fluid in these systems
Check your owner's manual before buying fluid. The wrong fluid causes seal degradation and leaks.
How to Change Power Steering Fluid (Turkey Baster Method)
This method removes 60–70% of the old fluid with no special equipment.
Step 1: With the engine cold, locate the power steering reservoir.
Step 2: Use a turkey baster or fluid transfer pump to remove as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir. Have a container ready.
Step 3: Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid to the MAX line. Use the correct type for your vehicle.
Step 4: Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock (full left to full right and back) three to four times. This circulates the new fluid through the rack, mixing it with the old fluid remaining in the system.
Step 5: Shut off the engine and check the reservoir level. It will likely have dropped as fluid moved into the system. Top off to MAX.
Step 6: Repeat steps 2–5 two more times total. After three cycles, the fluid in the system is approximately 85–90% fresh.
Complete System Flush (More Thorough Method)
For a full flush, you'll need a helper.
Step 1: Locate the power steering return line — the low-pressure hose that returns fluid from the rack to the reservoir.
Step 2: Disconnect the return line and route it into a drain bucket.
Step 3: Start the engine with a helper ready to pour fresh fluid into the reservoir as quickly as the old fluid drains.
Step 4: Continue adding fluid while slowly turning the steering wheel lock to lock until the fluid coming out is clean and matches the fresh fluid color.
Step 5: Reconnect the return line, refill the reservoir to MAX, and check for leaks.
After the Fluid Change
- Check the reservoir level again after 1 day of driving
- Listen for any pump whining — if it continues after a fluid change, the pump itself may be wearing
- Inspect all hose connections for leaks
