How to Fix a Slow Tire Leak at Home (Without a Shop)
A tire that loses 5 PSI a week isn't flat — but it'll cost you fuel economy, tire wear, and eventually a blowout. Shops charge $20–$40 to plug a tire. You can do it yourself for $10 in supplies. Here's how to track down a slow leak and fix it right.

- Tire plug kit (T-handle plugger with string plugs) — $8–$15
- Valve stem tool and replacement valve cores — $5
- Portable air compressor or gas station air
- Pliers
- Tire pressure gauge
Step 1: Find the Leak
First, determine where the air is escaping. There are three common sources:
A) The Tread (Most Common — Usually a Nail or Screw)
Inflate the tire to proper PSI. Spray soapy water all over the tread surface. Rotate the tire and look for bubbles. A nail or screw in the tread will create a steady stream of small bubbles. Sometimes you can hear a faint hiss.
B) The Valve Stem
Spray soapy water on the valve stem (the rubber or metal stem you use to add air). If you see bubbles at the base or tip of the valve, the core is loose or the stem is cracked.
C) The Bead (Rim Seal)
Spray around the outer edge where the tire meets the rim. Bubbles here indicate the tire bead isn't sealing against the rim. This is more common on alloy wheels with minor curb damage or corrosion.
Step 2: Fix Based on Source
Fixing a Nail/Screw in the Tread
Important: Only plug tires with punctures in the tread area (not the sidewall, not the shoulder). Sidewall punctures mean the tire needs replacement — no exceptions.
- Don't pull the object yet — it's actually slowing the leak. Get your tools ready first.
- Use pliers to pull the nail or screw straight out.
- Use the reamer tool from your plug kit to ream out the hole — insert and twist several times to clean and expand the puncture slightly. This helps the plug seat properly.
- Thread a string plug onto the insertion tool, leaving it centered. Apply the included rubber cement to the plug.
- Push the plug into the hole firmly — about 2/3 of the way through. Pull the tool out quickly with a straight, sharp pull. The plug stays in the hole.
- Trim the excess plug flush with the tread surface. Don't pull on it — cut it.
- Reinflate to proper PSI and re-spray with soapy water to confirm the leak is sealed.
Note: A string plug is a temporary-to-permanent roadside fix. For a proper permanent repair, a patch from the inside (done by removing the tire from the rim) is better — but plug kits hold up well for years in real-world use.
Fixing a Valve Stem Leak
If the valve core is loose, use your valve core tool to tighten it (clockwise). Re-spray and check. If it still leaks, remove the core and replace it — cores are $1 each and universal fit. If the stem itself is cracked or the base is leaking, you need a new valve stem — a $5 part but requires breaking the bead, so most people let a shop press it in.
Fixing a Bead Leak
Bead leaks on alloy wheels are often caused by corrosion on the rim's bead seat. This requires breaking the bead, cleaning the rim surface, and re-seating the tire with bead sealer. More involved — if you don't have a tire machine, have a shop reseat it. It's a quick job for them and cheap.
Step 3: Inflate and Monitor
After any repair, inflate to the recommended PSI (found on the door jamb sticker, not the tire sidewall — that's max pressure). Check with a gauge the next morning and 48 hours later. If it holds, you're good.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
- Sidewall or shoulder puncture — not repairable, full stop
- Tread depth under 2/32" — the tire is worn out anyway
- Multiple plugs in the same tire — you're past the point of reliable fixes
- Puncture larger than 1/4" — plug won't seal reliably
Don't gamble on worn-out or multiply-repaired tires at highway speed. A tire replacement costs less than a blowout accident.
